An organised group of approx. 400 chanting “Allahu Akbar”(Allah is the greatest) stormed the US Embassy in Benghazi, firing automatic weapons and RPG’s, the defences were overwhelmed with three security staff being killed. The embassy building was occupied, looted & pillaged, burned and finally demolished with explosive devices. The US ambassador Christopher Stevens and three other US diplomatic staff were killed by the enraged mob, his body and that of two others have now been recovered but the fourth was ripped to pieces and the body parts used as victory tokens by the crowd in a macabre victory celebration.
The attack and destruction of an embassy and murder of the ambassador and staff is normally considered a causus belli (act of war) but the US State Department under the Obama administration has initially responded by apologising in a press release: “…It condemned the continuing efforts by misguided (US) individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims.”. It seems some have indeed forgotten.
