“Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It would be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies.”

Maori elite, lawyers and consultants make grab for New Zealand. While John Key smirks and waves….

I can still remember the overwhelming disappointment that I felt when it dawned on me after the 2008 elections that National and John Key had scammed us with their bullshit about first the ETS and going into coalition with the Maori Party.
It is all going to end in tears. Good on Dr Newman and co for trying to do something about it. I have voted in their poll on equality and will donate to the cause.
John Ansell is another who is trying to do something about this racist nonsense.
However, I fear with the media stacked against them they will simply be ignored, which will keep the sheeple in the dark. What is it that they say about mushrooms again?
. . . ain’t that the truth !
Pix, I had exactly the same reaction. In the interests of being scrupulously fair, there was a caveat that no dramatic changes would take place in the first term.
But what has happened in the second term so far? Nothing! Mind you, I didn’t vote National last year (neither tick) as I had become very suspicious by then. The only promise made (and so far on track) was partial privatisation of some state assets. Now I support this policy, but it’s not a priority and if it doesn’t go ahead, or is delayed, I’m not bovvered.
Pix, I’m beginning to feel that the sheeple want to be kept in the dark–it sure beats thinking. :rant
I have been trying to convince my husband that we need to start looking to leave. My choice is either go back to Perth, which is where I am from or to the Sunshine Coast. I am just over the soul destroying nothingness of living here. Our only issue is the family with one about to start at uni next year. (Waikato). I know I know. It’s hard to find a more racist institution than that place of higher learning/indoctrination. Still, our opinions keep him grounded, and he can change countries with us. That is if I manage to convince my husband. If the Treaty becomes enshrined in a new Constitution I can’t imagine it will be too hard.
And that’s sad, Pix. NZ is losing the very people it so desperately needs in order to have a future.
Governments think those people can be replaced by immigrants, but in this day and age that’s simply not true. At least, not true if you want to maintain a recognizable Kiwi culture. The only people I saw while I was there who wholeheartedly embraced it were the South African immigrants, perhaps some Brits and some Europeans. The majority of Indians and Arabs never will.
We have our problems here in Oz, but at least state governments somewhat dilute the influence of Canberra. There’s no such safeguard in NZ.
Heh, our local governments are even worse…
