It is one of the abiding and defining characteristics of Leftist politics that once a victim-group has been identified, every effort must be made to ensure the members of that group remain enslaved in their victimhood.
In New Zealand, the uber-victim-group is that group of souls who suffer under the weight of having had a relative somewhere in their past who was … Maori. These poor folks are so genetically inferior to all other New Zealanders that they need special treatment in almost every facet of life. John Ansell has a good precis of the special favours given these unfortunates.
Of course those with Maori heritage are no more or less than anyone else. No better or worse. No smarter or more stupid. Not, in fact, genetically predisposed to anything particular, as a group. Like everyone else, they are individuals limited only be their own abilities, imaginations and determination. What keeps those of Maori descent at the bottom of educational and other life-outcomes surveys, and at the top of criminality and imprisonment statistics, is that the social-engineering elites of New Zealand have for the past 40 years expected those of Maori descent to be less, to do less and to contribute less than every other New Zealander. They have been told over, and over, and over that they are victims. They have, quite outrageously, been told that it isn’t really their fault that they’re violent to their partners, their children and each other; they have a “warrior gene”.
There has been a trend in recent years of those Maori who wish to get out from under, to flee the Tyranny of the Chiefs for Australia. Recent reports estimate more than one in five people who can claim Maori heritage now reside in Australia. Not that the Tasman Sea forms any barrier to the elites and their campaign to keep Maori “on the reservation”!
The headline reads “Maori turn Australian towns into ‘little NZs’”. Of course, it isn’t Maori who are turning Australian towns into “little New Zealands”, it’s the 50,000 Kiwis who flee the Cuba of the South Pacific for Australia each year.
Some trumped-up nobody names Hamer from Victoria University (I’ll bet it was a Sociologist) has completed a study and, without any evidence whatsoever, has claimed that Maori are “…among the country’s most disenfranchised immigrant groups.” Why would that be?
Well, it all goes back to CER and the ease with which Kiwis can emigrate to Australia, and Aussies can, if they so choose, do the reverse. For most kiwis, entry into Australia is automatic. It comes by way of a “Special Category” Visa. The terms of this Visa mean that unless while in Australia a Kiwi seeks permanent residency and/or citizenship, welfare agencies’ doors are closed to us. And that, it seems, is what is disenfranchising Maori.
The article states “…Hamer’s research shows the vast majority of Maori are not Australian citizens and are not eligible for permanent residency because they do not meet tough skills requirements. This means they are not entitled to most welfare payments – including unemployment benefit – or the student loan scheme, placing them among the most disenfranchised ethnic immigrant groups in Australia…” In fact, most Kiwis who flee to Australia do not ultimately take citizenship, and it would be better that if taxpayer wedge were to be wasted studying Kiwis in Oz, it would be better spent answering the question of “why”. And the skills requirements are not “tough”. They are exactly the same (with some local tailoring) as the skills requirements for citizenship in almost every other nation of the civilised world.
Is this Hamer advocating closing Australia’s borders to Kiwis, placing the barrier at the same height as for every other immigrant? Imagine the outcry as our closest and preferred bolt-hole is slammed shut?
In fact, Hamer’s research is nothing more than propaganda produced to fit a meme. In the same article, someone made the mistake of asking an actual Maori actually living in Australia. His view: “He said most Maori had adapted well, and Perth’s Waitangi Day celebrations now attracted more than 7000 people every year.”
Hamer and his ilk are the reason Kiwis are fleeing at a rate of 50,000 per year. It is he and his kind who are responsible for New Zealand having spent the past century sliding down all of the relevant surveys, from having had the highest incomes and standards of living in the world a century ago, to flirting with Third-World status today.

Now that it is on paper that Maori in Australia are ‘disinfranchised’, and written by some academic ‘wannabe’ it can be used as a reference for ‘Maori’ to demand social welfare benefits in Australia.
But, I do not think the Oz Maori will do that.
A majority of them are over there to get away from tribalism and make a good go of life off their own steam in a country that lets them get ahead.
Exactly right, Trina. So many Maori I spoke to during my 10 years living in Oz had succeeded without any kind of affirmative action. They go there to escape, to make better lives for themselves and their families (just as do all other New Zealanders who flee), and absent the shackles of low expectation, lifelong entitlement and liberal patronisation, surprise surprise, many are incredibly successful!
Er, what am I missing here? As a % of all Kiwis moving to Aussie, a larger % of those who claim Maori/Polynesian race do worse than those of Caucasian origin but not as badly as those of Middle-Eastern or African origin. If you search the stats for % of poverty/crime/benefits/poor health etc, (good luck trying) there is no surprise to be had; if you have been paying attention over the last 20 or so years. A big hats off to immigrants of any origin who do bloody well in any new Country DESPITE the ruinous, patronising, liberal, lying feel-good fucking crap of cultural dispensation, aka, muticulturalism . Yeah, settling in OK, thanks for asking. But I’m not really in Jafaland – the place we’ve bought has all the benefits of being a Jafa – specifically a wonderful sea view – but we’ve minimised the drawbacks. We’ve bought one of the first places that was built at Gulf Harbour, Whangaparaoa (a proper place, not a cookie-cutter lego house). We have a proper section with a proper garden and we don’t look out our lounge window and into our neighbour’s toilet. And I have to say, taking the ferry to work and back is a damned civilised way to travel!
The worst thing about being home in NZ is the project I’m running requires me to travel to Wellington periodically. That joint is like the black hole of bloody Calcutta!

Australia offers no welfare to any Kiwi – Result: Kiwi immigrants to Aus succeed – whether Maori or European
New Zealand offers the most generous welfare (% wage per capita) in the world – Result: Kiwi residents in NZ fail – whether Maori or European.
NZ could easily have the same success at home that Kiwis have abroad: just stop the welfare. And YES that does include the super, the dole, the DPB, the WFF, the ACC, and especially that “state” health and education systems none of which Kiwis resident in Aus can access.
Just think: mandating private schools & hospital care – that people have to love their kids enough to pay for school, and to pay for private health insurance because you’re not covered by the Aussie Medicare makes people much more successful and much healthier
The NZ->Aus migration has been one of the greatest economic laboratories ever. The only real difference is that Aus doesn’t give Kiwi emigrants anything: THEY BUILD IT THEMSELVES
