Wimmin’s Lit:

On an all-female shortlist for a literary award
‘..Wendy Holden, one of the Costa judges, described the shortlist as “a great result”.
She added: “As well as recognising some truly great work it is a warning to men to pull their socks up, stop being so complacent and write some decent books.”..’

Not at all–it’s an admission that women can’t compete on an equal footing with men. Wabbit regards almost anything written by a woman as garbage. (A shining exception is “The Madness of a Seduced Woman” by Susan Fromberg Schaeffer.) As for the rest….turgid, tedious, child or relationship obsessed rubbish. Mills and Boon with chrome knobs on. Which of course is why books written by women are almost always reviewed by women.

Not a fan of Daphne du Maurier or the Bronte sisters?

  2. Flashman says:

It would be a real hoot for a thoroughly-sardonic-towards-women-in-general man to write a chick-lit best seller behind the curtain of a female pen-name and constructed identity.

In fact, I’m sure it’s been done.

Don’t get me started on literary awards! Got nominated for one, yet they were not interested in a (free) copy of the book. So how the fuck did they assess it?

Fuck them. My measure of success is in my download counter. Enough to earn me a bronze best seller in NZ. Which means less to me than a satisfactory bowel motion…

  4. Since this female believes that “brevity is the soul of whit” – this female writer generously gives you this –
    C-CS

Agreed – many women (especially wymin) writers are dull, duller, dullest. However, that said, try The Way The Crow Flies by Canadian Ann-Marie MacDonald or Place Of Execution by Scot Val McDermid. Genuine good reads.

Thanks Alix, I’ll see if I can get some reviews and the local (very small) library will order in any books we want.
Update: I found two reviews and both were very positive, so I’ll order the books from our library.

Both men and women have written excellent books. It’s this “wyman/ wimmin” shit that bores me titless.
