When I was stationed in Berlin (1974 to 1977) and 25% of our Military Intelligence unit were females, but guess how many of them had the CIB (Combat Infantry Badges) ? How many of them were paratroop qualified? How many of them were qualified to serve with the armored divisions in the yearly fall exercise in West Germany? How many of them had the Purple Heart? How many of them had served in the Vietnam War?
Drum roll!
…And the answer is ZERO!
BTW, I was detailed to be the Platoon sergeant of the young ladies in Field Station Berlin late 1974, who were segregated on the fourth floor of our barracks. On my first inspection I was shocked…YES, SHOCKED! In regards to what I ordered to be a full field layout (rifle and combat gear) – the women – I kid you not – had placed Teddy Bears and other dolls on their bunks instead of their rifles and combat gear.
When I finally calmed down I asked one buxom blonde what the deal was, she said, “Sergeant Ronbo, none of us have been infantry trained. We went thru WAC (Women Army Corps) training and we didn’t understand that stuff about a “full field layout inspection”, so we put our dolls on our bunks, since we couldn’t find the rifles.”
Women soldiers…you gotta love them!
