For our American friends:

2014-07-04-CREITThis speaks to (and for) all of us here at CR. We trust you not to let the light go out. Below the fold is something that says it all on behalf of America’s friends. (Thanks to Michael for reminding me of it)

Stirring 1973 ‘The Americans’ Radio Commentary: ‘I Am One Canadian Who Is Damned Tired of Hearing Them Kicked Around’

“The United States dollar took another pounding on German, French and British exchanges this morning, hitting the lowest point ever known in West Germany. It has declined there by 41% since 1971 and this Canadian thinks it is time to speak up for the Americans as the most generous and possibly the least-appreciated people in all the earth.

As long as sixty years ago, when I first started to read newspapers, I read of floods on the Yellow River and the Yangtze. Who rushed in with men and money to help? The Americans did.

They have helped control floods on the Nile, the Amazon, the Ganges and the Niger. Today, the rich bottom land of the Mississippi is under water and no foreign land has sent a dollar to help. Germany, Japan and, to a lesser extent, Britain and Italy, were lifted out of the debris of war by the Americans who poured in billions of dollars and forgave other billions in debts. None of those countries is today paying even the interest on its remaining debts to the United States.

When the franc was in danger of collapsing in 1956, it was the Americans who propped it up and their reward was to be insulted and swindled on the streets of Paris. I was there. I saw it.

When distant cities are hit by earthquakes, it is the United States that hurries into help…Managua Nicaragua is one of the most recent examples. So far this spring, 59 American communities have been flattened by tornadoes. Nobody has helped.

The Marshall Plan…the Truman Policy…all pumped billions upon billions of dollars into discouraged countries. Now, newspapers in those countries are writing about the decadent war-mongering Americans.

I’d like to see one of those countries that is gloating over the erosion of the United States dollar build its own airplanes.

Come on…let’s hear it! Does any other country in the world have a plane to equal the Boeing Jumbo Jet, the Lockheed Tristar or the Douglas 10? If so, why don’t they fly them? Why do all international lines except Russia fly American planes? Why does no other land on earth even consider putting a man or women on the moon?

You talk about Japanese technocracy and you get radios. You talk about German technocracy and you get automobiles. You talk about American technocracy and you find men on the moon, not once, but several times…and safely home again. You talk about scandals and the Americans put theirs right in the store window for everyone to look at. Even the draft dodgers are not pursued and hounded. They are here on our streets, most of them…unless they are breaking Canadian laws…are getting American dollars from Ma and Pa at home to spend here.

When the Americans get out of this bind…as they will…who could blame them if they said “the hell with the rest of the world.” Let someone else buy the Israel bonds. Let someone else build or repair foreign dams or design foreign buildings that won’t shake apart in earthquakes.

When the railways of France, Germany and India were breaking down through age, it was the Americans who rebuilt them. When the Pennsylvania Railroad and the New York Central went broke, nobody loaned them an old caboose. Both are still broke. I can name to you 5,000 times when the Americans raced to the help of other people in trouble.

Can you name me even one time when someone else raced to the Americans in trouble? I don’t think there was outside help even during the San Francisco earthquake.

Our neighbors have faced it alone and I am one Canadian who is damned tired of hearing them kicked around. They will come out of this thing with their flag high. And when they do, they are entitled to thumb their nose at the lands that are gloating over their present troubles.

I hope Canada is not one of these. But there are many smug, self-righteous Canadians. And finally, the American Red Cross was told at its 48th Annual meeting in New Orleans this morning that it was broke.

This year’s disasters…with the year less than half-over…has taken it all and nobody…but nobody…has helped.”

The light isn’t out yet, but it is growing dimmer :!:

When I was a young soldier stationed in Germany during the 1970s, I looked down my nose at the older Germans who did nothing to stop the rise of Hitler and his Nazis party to power while thinking,

“It could never happen in my country…WE WOULDN’T ALLOW IT :!:

Well it is HAPPENING :!: Daily we lose another civil right and the opposition says,

“Sooner or later the Progressives will go too far and that will be the end of them,” or

“Just wait until the next election, we’ll throw the bums out :!::sad:

But nothing happens except another chain is added to our already impressive load of them and we have become little more than serfs on our way to becoming slaves.

    • Ronbo says:

      It’s a classic and I love it :!:

BTW, the Canadians are doing an excellent job with border security…they even stop Americans from entering their country if they have so much as a DWI on their record :!:

…and as for immigration to Canada, unless you have been a choir boy or girl scout all your life, DO NOT APPLY. If you try asking for political asylum, you go to prison until your case gets to the judge and that could take months.

We Americans should do immigration the Canadian way.

@Ronbo – “We Americans should do immigration the Canadian way.”

Agreed, Ronbo (or the Australian way, as in “send-back-the-boats” Abbott.)

Have a great Fourth of July!
( You too, Darin, C-CS and others out there…. )

It’s the same all over the West, Ronbo. And most people either don’t realise it or don’t give a damn.

  5. KG says:

‘…Let this July 4th stand not just for independence but for reclaiming America. Don’t let liberals talk down the Founders unopposed. Don’t let local tyrants force you to take down the American flag. Don’t let the many triumphs of our nation go unremarked.
We crossed the Delaware with Washington and held off the British at Ft. McHenry. We fought a bloody war to end slavery and another to save the world from fascism. We have grown and built, invented and explored our way to greatness. We remain the greatest nation on earth. Don’t let anyone take that away.’

Yesterday in Seattle 126 people from 70 different countries became American citizens.

…and they did it the old fashioned legal way that in some cases took years of hard work :!:

Patriots are not against LEGAL immigration.

    We are against ILLEGAL immigration.

Remember always, that in their slow slither towards absolute power “your” government will destroy you if necessary.
Their unelected minions in back rooms will trash your reputation, destroy you and your family and if necessary they will kill you.
The evidence that this is so is overwhelming. Only fools and the hopelessly uninformed think otherwise.

  9. Thank you for posting this, KG. With all of the bad things said about my homeland, you forget that we still have friends in the world. I greatly appreciate you taking the time to remind me of that. As far as all of the assistance that my fellow countrymen have given the world, we don’t believe that we are anything special because of it. It is just what good neighbors do to help someone who is having a hard time. As for those nations that criticize when they should pitch in, we have no harsh words for them. We just hope that maybe one day, they will follow our example.

Again, I thank you for this. It made my day.

    • KG says:

Good to see you, William and no thanks are due. Here in the Pacific especially we owe Americans a massive debt that can never be adequately repaid.
There are still a lot of us with long memories and a sense of honour.

      • The Gantt Guy says:

Exactly! To put a twist on an above anecdote:

American to Aussie or Kiwi: Do you speak Japanese?
        Aussie or Kiwi: No
        American: You’re welcome.

And yet, for many Aussies and Kiwis, “thank you” would feel like swallowing a dead rat.

        • Ronbo says:

Yes, the Japanese were headed for Australia and New Zealand at full speed in 1942 when the “American cavalry” headed them off at the pass, which were wide open to invasion because they had sent the best of their military to defend North Africa.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_good.gif
