Sir Kenneth Charles Branagh :!: My favorite modern Shakespeare actor/director. I think his version of HAMLET in 1996 was the best ever.

Yes, I also enjoyed his 1989 version of Henry V which he made at age 29, which was pretty much the same age of the real Henry V who won Battle of Agincourt in 1415, despite being outnumbered five to one by the French knights.

Final score: About 100 English yeomen dead; approximately 10,000 French knights killed.

Rule Number One: Never charge English yeomen armed with the longbow over muddy ground…..your armor won’t stop the arrows and if you still alive long enough to reach the English line, you and your war horse will get stuck in the mud, and the English will knock you dead in the head while stuck in the mud. Oh! And thank you very much for the nice new set of dented armor, the war horse and your heavy purse full of golden crowns.

I wonder about the French – Agincourt was in many ways a repeat of their bloody defeat by Edward “The Black Prince” one hundred years before.

That particular scene was, I think, the best it’s ever been done. But his “St. Crispin’s day” speech in the same movie just didn’t ring true for me.
Branagh and Fishburne’s “Othello” was magnificent.

What about Branagh’s 1996 “Hamlet” :?: He did the entire Shakespeare script, which isn’t often done in the movies. I liked the 19th century staging. The acting was excellent with big name actors like the late Charlton Heston in minor roles.

By the look of that clip, they’ve taken Lee Childs’ fine writing and character and turned them into a typical piece of Hollywood shit.

      • Darin says:

It’s a Tom Clancey story along the lines of Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger. Not nearly as bad as the trailer looks.

How about playing well the ultimate bad guy in this movie :?:

As I’ve said many times I was stationed in Berlin during the Cold War and during the 1970s the mansion where this conference took place was a U.S. Army Recreation Center, and like many G.I.s, I spent many enjoyable summer days there. In the back of the building there were sail and motor boats available for a cheap rental to cruise upon Lake Wanssee, which bordered on the property.

It wasn’t until later I discovered what had happened there in 1942. I understand after the U.S. Army withdrew from Berlin in 1994, the building was turned over to the German government.

I wonder if there is a memorial there now :?:
