I was in Dili at the time.
I remember manning a position in the city, towards the Indo army, who’s position was towards us. They were in the process of withdrawing, the place had been well trashed, job done. We must have been only a few 100m apart but we knew they wouldn’t try anything silly..
The Aussies have spent some serious defense $$$ in Darwin. Quite obvious why, especially when you hear about Indo soldiers/spies being found ashore along the NT coast.
A friend of mine knows several men who were involved with Indo/Aussi joint military exercises (otherwise known as “you show me yours and I show you mine).
Apparently you can go into any of the officer’s quarters over there and they’ll have a map on the wall showing everything south of Indonesia to be Indonesian territory.
A few Nukes in the arsenal would put a damper on Indonesia’s plans.
