Idiot socialism:

‘Rental properties will have to meet a set of minimum standards under rules to be unveiled by the Government next month.
The move will stop short of a full “warrant of fitness” for rentals but is aimed at ensuring all tenants have a safe and healthy home to live in, Government sources confirmed.
That is likely to include a requirement for insulation, although sources said there was still work to be done to set any standards at a practical level. It is due to be announced next month by Building and Housing Minister Nick Smith, along with an assessment of a warrant of fitness trial in state houses, and would apply to all rentals both private and public…’
All this will do is ensure that rental properties become scarcer and more expensive. The arrangement between me and my landlord is none of the government’s damn business. And how much will policing this idiocy cost?

“Idiot Socialism” – excellent example of tautology

Seek the incentive: who wins here?

Not the landlords: they will be out of pocket (or out of business, if upgrading their property is not economically viable)

Not the renters: As you point out – scarcer housing and higher rents will result. Someone has to pay for the upgrades. And the wealthier renters are already in snug housing, so the price increase falls directly on the poor.

Not the taxpayers: we will be paying for policing this nonsense, upgrading social housing and paying more subsidies…

Yes, you guessed it. The winners will be National politicians, who, once again, defeat a promising line of attack from the opposition by apparently caving into all but their most extreme demands. Later, they will use the most extreme stuff to cudgel the opposition.

Of course the media will be all over those things, MacDoctor.
      Not.
This is a cynical ploy by National and the odious Nick Smith and I very much doubt we’ll see any intelligent criticism of it in the media. Socialism 5.0 and damn the unintended consequences.

    Nick Smith = National Socialism.

All centrally controlled political systems are eventually taken over by Big Money that only could come to power because of the centrally controlled political systems. That’s why the US federal government was given so few powers. It is also a system that eventually will run out of other peoples money. It is like a cancer , autodestructive.

Saw the gentleman in the Nelson airport today. Wish I had a tuna bomb to drop in the old valise he was carrying. Would have provided mirth for all.

Not one single pound coin is permitted to move without government taking a slice. This is a classic example of legislating apparently for our benefit, but really creating jobs and adding another layer of control. Our great grandchildren will hate us, firstly for the debt we left them and secondly for the staggeringly creative claw-back schemes which we are now leaving them. Future historians will laugh at us, one way or another we will be made to look stupid and weak or venal and grasping. Or both.

    • KG says:

      Yep. Absolutely.
Although our grandchildren will very likely regard this as perfectly normal and fail to rebel against it.
      Good little indoctribots……..

I note the ‘asbestos riddled debris’ part of the item. Perhaps he was only trying to save them from a horrible lingering death, much like many on the left that legislate for upgrading rental properties.
