AP analysis: Dozens of deaths likely from VW pollution dodge
WASHINGTON (AP) ” Volkswagen’s pollution-control chicanery hasn’t just been victimless tinkering.
An Associated Press statistical and computer analysis shows that extra pollution kills between five and 20 people in the United States annually in recent years.
The AP analysis found the software that the company admitted using to evade government emissions limits allowed VWs to spew enough pollution to kill somewhere between 16 and 94 people over seven years ” with the annual count increasing more recently as more of the diesels were on the road.

Where to begin, dismantling this load of rancid bilge?

    • Michael in Nelson says:

Begin by pointing out they used a model to estimate the number of deaths. Like those climate models that have been able to predict what will happen because of the increase in CO2, Oh wait.

In the 70’s the GM products I owned had a compressor attached to the fan belt that blew air into the exhaust pipe. When the exhaust was tested, it met federal standards, but only because it wasn’t just exhaust. It was mixed exhaust and clean air. The compressor took power to run and mileage decreased. You burned more gas to go the same distance, but it legally met the pollution standards. GM did not get so much as a warning letter from the feds

    • MvL says:

Not only GM went down this route.
My vintage German auto uses the same system. An air pump to freshen the exhaust with clean air. Makes absolutely no difference to the combustion process. Needless to say said pump has been on a shelf in the garage for many years.

    • Flashman says:

Aah! GM’s good ‘ol smog pump.

The first thing that got deep-sixed when rebuilding used imported small block Chevy engines in South African back in the day.

  3. MacDoctor says:

I am constantly amazed at the stupidity of so-called “experts”. They are using smog models to calculate the number of potential deaths caused by additional pollution. Aside from the fact that these models are rarely accurate enough to calculate such small numbers (the margin of error being similar), there is little or no smog any more in US cities so the contribution to the smog from dirty VWs is zero. Therefore the additional deaths caused is zero. The extra nitric oxide and other noxious gases are safely dissipated into the atmosphere and rendered harmless unless there is a fog.

    • KG says:

      Exactly.
And how come buses and trucks – which often spew enormous amounts of diesel fumes withing the confines of cities – aren’t causing anything like the same level of concern and faux outrage as the relatively very clean burning VWs?
This smells of a confected campaign to discredit VW, despite the fact that the emissions standards are unrealistic and a child of the lawless EPA.
And is it just coincidence that the massive EUSSR campaign to promote diesel in passenger cars has recently been admitted to be a mistake?

  4. Cadwallader says:

I drive a V6 VW CC which generates 217kw. It guzzles petroleum and almost flies. I understand the so-called “scandal” relates to the monitoring of emissions from diesel motors and not to the extent of the emissions. Either way…I don’t care. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_unsure.gif

O/T Why are there so many articles being produced currently which seem to be intent on discrediting Monsanto? Any ideas?

Two interesting articles on unions and labor that expose the left for who they are-

The Unions want to exempt employers who hire union workers for the $15 minimum wage. The truth here-unions represent themselves.

There is no wage disparity between right to work and mandatory union participation states-

My mate down in Melbourne said the the Trans Pacific Partnership died in the ass, which I thought was good. Then just now turning computer on a headline comes up “12 Countries sign TPP”?
