‘55,000 guns imported each year

More than 500,000 firearms, worth $242 million, have been legally imported into New Zealand over the past decade, newly obtained figures have revealed.
…The police national manager for response and operations, Superintendent Chris Scahill, said firearms-related offending remains “consistently very low” – accounting for an average of 1.3 per cent of all violent offending over the past five years…’
And of those offenders, a vanishingly small number were licensed firearms owners.
One wonders what the figures are concerning knives for the same period.

Kinda gives the lie to calls for firearms to be banned, doesn’t it? But commonsense and statistics will never sway the hoplophobes. Or the Police Union.

The real issue is not about public safety – The real issue is the personal security of the Ruling Class, which knows the well armed citizen can terminate their existence with EXTREME prejudice.

@KG: Next year we may get that bloody revolution we have been talking about for years.

The critical mass has been reached.

    It won’t be long now,

  2. The Gantt Guy says:

    So, from the article …

    • police believe there are around 1.5 million guns in New Zealand, theoretically meaning there is one firearm for every three New Zealanders.
    • the media’s go-to guy Gre Newbold doesn’t think it’s an issue. “It won’t appear to have an impact on the safety of police or the average New Zealander. The people who buy guns are collectors, hunters and gun nuts.”
    • The owner of New Zealand’s largest gun retailer says “New Zealand has one of the highest rates [of gun ownership] per capita in the world and we’re good with it – it’s not doing any harm.”
    • Guns account for an astonishing small amount of overall violent crime. An average of 1.3 per cent of all violent offending over the past five years. According to police

And yet, the union which looks after coppers thinks there’s a problem and they want an inquiry. Why? What could possibly improve on those incredible numbers? And they are, by any stretch, incredible. New Zealand has an appalling record of violence – the statistics for child abuse and murder are disgusting – among certain “elements” of society at least. And yet, despite a comparatively large number of guns apparently lying all over the place, nobody gets shot!

So, crikey, maybe guns aren’t the problem after all?

    • Ronbo says:

      Guns were never the problem.

Guns will never be the problem.

      Crime is not the problem.

Governments ruled by brain dead Leftist elites is the WORLD problem.

The most horrible sentence in the English language:

“I’m from the government and I’ve come to help.”

  3. Gary W. Anthony, MSgt, USAF, Ret. says:

I wonder how many of that count are imported by hunters for a 1 or 2 week hunting trip?

    • KG says:

I think a fair few, Gary. I’ve done it myself and I know the departments which deal with that are usually very busy, especially in spring/summer.

  4. Warren Tooley says:

I have a BB gun, doesn’t that count towards the overall statistics.

  5. Mathew says:

Strict gun control alright, funny how a 15 year old politically motivated (the lying scumbag at the top didn’t mention what political party though) disenfranchised teenager managed to get hold of one and murder someone who isn’t allowed to own one.
