‘It’s cronyism, not capitalism..!!
There’s no damn free market. There’s merely a mass of cronyist dealings between fake businessmen/ women and politicians and bureaucrats and these deals intrude into just about every facet of our lives…’
Damn right. And it’s far, far worse than that.

Mate of mine is trying to put up a carport.

Carport costs about $2000 in kit form.

Permits to erect it start at $2000 with his local council.

    But here’s the real kicker.

He goes to the council to try and sort his way through the maze.

Told he has to hire an “approved building certifier” to process his application. (these are private companies).

    You see how it works?

    • KG says:

I’ve always seen how it works, and railed against it.
But the awful truth is that most people are apathetic sheep or pissed-off ratepayers who are heavily outgunned by the council’s legal resources. (resources paid for by the ratepayers, naturally).
Until mass civil disobedience forces it, nothing will change. Ever.

When my folks bought the house my father and I are living in now, they had to do a complete remodel, actually damn near rebuild the place.
Two of the contractors that were licensed and approved by the city did shitty work, that the folks had to buy permits and inspections for.
Long story short, they lost a bunch of money paying another contractor to correct all the mistakes the other two made, which the city inspector had signed off on.
During all this I took up the issue, loudly and publicly at a city council meeting. One female council member (card carrying member of C.U.N.T) even made the statement that “it’s not the city’s responsibility to insure that work on your property is done right” at which point I asked here just what was the purpose of having a f–king building code and inspector?

So this all ended with the folks names being added to a class action lawsuit against the city, that was bought by the state attorney general(there were many more people who were screwed the same way),but that suit has been tied up in court,by the city, using taxpayer money to do so,for six years.

The building inspector was fired and I told him and both contractors that if I ever see them again their nuts will end up next to their Tonsils  Groin Kick

Any real fightback has to start at this level, not Federal politics.

Our local mob is pretty good by most standards (good government being like having a case of the crabs rather than syphillis).

      • Andrew Berwick says:

You think civil disobedience will force anything?

        Never has, never will.

        • KG says:

Wrong. Again. And so stupidly wrong I can’t be bothered pointing out why.

          • Wombat says:

            Rosa Parks?

In any case, when civil disobedience fails it’s typically due to all the spineless excuse makers who knuckle under and qualify their cowardice by saying “You think civil disobedience will force anything? Never has, never will.”

The principle is simple: it’s my land, I own it, I can do whatever-the-fuck I want with it.
    Beginning. End.

    • KG says:

The principle is simple, sure. But the reality is otherwise.
You may “own” it, but you sure as hell can’t “do whatever-the-fuck” you want with it.
      So what’s your point?

      • Wombat says:

It’s called a civilisation, Mr Berwick. Libertarian theory inevitably comes back to this. If you piss me off sufficiently and refuse to stop then my only option is to end you.

So, for example, if you set up a meth lab in the room across the fence from my baby daughter’s room and refuse to recognise that it being your land doesn’t make me an “uninvolved party” then one day I will substituted the uncontrolled explosion your meth lab will likely cause for a controlled explosion that occurs when you turn the key in the ignition of your car.

        Comprende?

Think of society as a tribe. Tribes have laws. They have rules. Even in the deepest Amazon. Sometimes the tribe gets too large. Definably it is too large when those rules are seen by a substantial portion of the tribe to no longer be in their benefit. In such an instance the most peaceful recourse is for secession. Where that cannot be achieved then civil war is inevitable.

So, yes, you should be able to build a shed without some asshole reaming your wallet.

No, you should not be allowed to run a meth lab next door to me.

And, yes, if you’re waiting for a tribal species to embrace libertarian theory then you will be waiting a long fucking time.
