At approximately 0830, 6 June 1944, Omaha Beach was virtually lost to the Allies.
Part of the initial assault plan was that 32 Duplex Drive tanks would be launched approximately five kilometers off the beach.
Two Navy LT.JGs each in charge of an LCT (Landing Craft Tank) with four tanks aboard, saw the 100% failure of launches left and right and refused to drop the ramps–keeping their tanks on board. They did not ask permission. They independently saw the folly of the act and judged that better opportunities might exist. They did not report this. They simply continued toward the shore with their loads intact.
Each of the Lts saw independently, the opportunity to land regardless of the order, as they each intuitively and clearly understood the necessity to get those tanks ashore. At virtually the same time, they made the decision to crash through everything and land the tanks.
They saw each other and acted in tandem, aligning about a kilometer out and surged full speed ahead firing their 20mms and .50 calibers as they went forward. Each crashed their loads on the beach which promptly went to work.
Disobedience that day began to be a shared virtue. Offshore about five kilometers, was the destroyer line.
The Captain of the Frankford, a LT CDR, was closest to the shore and grew increasingly frustrated by events. The many failures were constantly passing by his ship with wounded and dire tales. He went to the gunnery officer’s position and began to examine the beach with the best telescope on the ship. What he saw through all the chaos was the lone tank that made it to the cliffs as well as the broached tank in the water. He could see those engaging targets. He immediately moved his ship, absent authority, closer–less than 800 meters from the beach and a rising tide. There was less than three feet under the keel.
Immediately, he began firing at the targets the tanks were engaging. The tanker near the cliff quickly figured out what was happening, and a sergeant rose out of the turret with a signal flag and waved at the ship. The two in tandem, then began a methodical bombardment of the cliff bunkers. The tank would fire a round indicating target and the Frankford would mass fire at the same spot with positive results. Several bunkers were undercut and literally rolled down the cliff face. One such undermining is clearly visible today above Dog Green as a deep “v” incised in the crest.
Very quickly, the other destroyers, also absent authority, began to support. They moved in much closer to where their observers could physically see the cliffs and bunkers and began to engage.This was THE moment for the troops ashore. They saw this, took heart, and for the first time, began to coalesce and move forward.
There is a lesson here. Flexibility exercised with good judgment is a pearl without price if it resides within the mind of the man on the spot.

Getting him to pay attention in training was difficult, to say the least. Getting him to work at his MOS wasn’t an easy task either, but when you go to war, you go with what and who you have. As good fortune would have it, we had the perfect job for him.
Now, my intrepid reader, you may be wondering why I have taken the time to write this story or why the keeper of this blog has made the effort to publish it. The answer is actually pretty simple. You may think that I think that Slick was absolutely worthless. Far from it. Let me explain. First, Slick did a necessary job freeing up other people to do other tasks. In short, he made himself useful within his skill set. He wasn’t seeking glory, or trying to upstage anyone else. He just did his job, admittedly not perfectly, but well enough and it’s always better to perform a necessary task well with humility than to try to go seeking glory and fuck everything up.
This brings me to my next point. In a post SHTF situation, there are going to be a lot of mundane, but extremely important, jobs that need to be done that don’t require lots of military training. If you’re not prior military, don’t try to do all of the fancy military stuff. Even if you are a former 11B with lots of experience, keep in mind that you won’t have the resources or the recent training that you used to have. Oh, and in case anyone is thinking that they’ve taken a tactical class at tacticool school and can beat Slick, think again. Even though Slick was combat service support, Slick went through 12 weeks of basic training. In those 12 weeks, Slick learned to handle the M16A1, the M60, the M203, and the M2, as well as familiarization with the M72 LAW. He learned to patrol, set up a defensive perimeter, and learned to do fire and manoeuvre. He did this for approximately 14 hours a day (in some cases more) 6½ days per week, with a few hours off Sunday mornings for church.
Now some of you will rightfully point out that a lot of that time is learning drill, customs, wearing a uniform, etc., and you would be correct.
AND WRONG.
All of those items teach discipline, the following of orders, and unit cohesion – concepts just as important to winning as any tactic that you may or may not learn in a class. None of this counts any additional tactical training time that he got in AIT, with the unit prior to mobilization, or the refresher training that we got during mobilization. Add to that the fact that Slick could pass an Army PT test (how many people can actually do that for real, not just behind a key board?) and could do 15 mile road march with a fully loaded pack in 3-4 hours. Yup. Slick could.
Could Slick or any of the rest of us in the unit do infantry? No, at least not well, and I was combat arms. My point? Tacticool school doesn’t even qualify you to take on Slick, much less 10th Mountain, but guess what???””

Trump is speaking tonight in Huntington, West Virginia – my old hometown where I lived the first 17 years of my life. On 25 May 1966 I graduated from high school. On 15 June 1966 I joined the U.S. Army at the recruiting station on Third Avenue, which was just across the street from City Hall in the Federal Building.
In those days of the unpopular Vietnam War – a young man in California or New York waited for the draft, or went to college and received a student deferment from the draft board – In West Virginia and southern Ohio we marched to sound of the cannons as volunteers ready to defend the Republic.
Anyhow, it would appear the Governor of West Virginia has departed the Democrat Party and rallied to the Republican side in a very popular move, since 77% of West Virginians voted for Trump last year.
This is on the same day, Herr Mueller – the traitor witch hunter general – went to a Grand Jury seeking an indictment of Trump who to date has done nothing but good for the Republic.
It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. I think it all ends in bloody civil war – a prediction of mine going back to 2005. I just don’t see how it can end any other way.
If the Left is successful in overthrowing Trump by pseudo-legal means, or in a violent para military putsch, or by assassination – half the country will join West (BY GOD!) Virginia and march on Washington, D.C.
