I think Trump should throw down the gauntlet to the EU and declare that the US officially recognizes the new Republic of Catalan.
I could be mistaken but there might be some ancient treaty between England (or Great Britain) and Catalonia which assures their independence. If true that would be a lovely bargaining chip in the Brexit negotiations.

Of course, if the new nation joins the European Union, what was the point of leaving Spain?
It would indeed be very stupid but this new nation has shown a lot of europeans that the EU is not about freedom and could therefore be the beginning of the end of the EU dictatorship.
