“Dennis Potter’s last interview, given in 1994 when he was dying of pancreatic cancer and living on morphine, cigarettes, and his work, stands, in my judgment, as one of the most extraordinary documentations of moral courage and intellectual honesty ever committed to videotape…” (review)
A very fine interviewer and a fascinating interviewee. This is wonderful on so many levels, all I can say is watch it, and see how good television could be, if only….
I used http://file2hd.com/ to download it from YouTube and it took just three minutes on a crappy wireless connection.
What can you say after watching the interview but that the man was a genius
Also, a man of courage facing certain death in a very short time.
Very honest expression of life.My Aunt died from Pancreatic Cancer and the comments about the flower blossoms and paying greater attention to the little things rings true. She was more alive in the last few months of her life than the previous 50 odd years.Sad that we don’t enjoy life more until it’s slipping away
The function of death is to put tension and joy into life.
A real inspiration, he could have so easily chosen a path of anger and bitterness. Instead he chose to carry on as best he could with a dignity that’s often lacking in today’s world.
That interviewer also deserves some kudos, these days you wouldn’t find one able to to handle someone sitting across from them chain-smoking away. Too many delicate petals and narcs around these days.
Absolutely, Mathew. And these days the interviewer would be a “media personality” who would make it all about himself. Any Melvyn Bragg interview is impressive to watch and ought to be a lesson to the current crop of egomaniac clowns.
