‘AOS cop acquitted over accidental shooting

A former Hawke’s Bay armed offenders squad member who was charged with accidentally shooting a man while he was arrested and lying face-down on the ground has today been acquitted.
The man who has name suppression had been on trial for three and a half days at the Napier District Court before Judge David Ongley facing one charge of carelessly using a firearm.
The jury returned the not guilty verdict after two hours deliberation.
The court heard on August 16, 2013 the man was unintentionally shot when the AOS member’s M4 Bushmaster rifle went off as he leant forward to help lift the man from the ground.
…The constable’s lawyer, Jonathan Krebs, told the court his client had not received the training he needed to adequately equip him for the front line…’
So, if I forget to check the safety on my firearm and somebody gets shot as a result, that’s a sure conviction for carelessly using a firearm, and would result in a conviction, loss of licence and possible jail time.
A cop, however, is magically immune..
