    I lived for quite a few years in a police state – apartheid South Africa – and have seen how it works.

    Gruppenführer Wiggins ticks all the boxes and wins this week’s Special Agent cap:

    1. Warrantless home invasion.
    2. A firearms is the primary tool and tactic.
    3. Adopt and display an purposefully ambiguous official identity.
    4. Provide dissembling responses to questions from third parties.
    5. The victims’ version of events is inconsistent with my own – and statements provided by my associates.
    6. I followed due processes according to the situation.
    7. I was acting in good faith/under orders/in accordance (take your pick) with (insert suitable nebulous policy/regulation/decree/law). This one is THE catch-all victim buzzkill.
    8. My actions were prompted by the need to catch a bad guy/protect the innocent/my associates/protect the state (select suitable noble justification).
    9. I have no further comment at this time. (Everyone will forget this incident by the next news cycle.)
    10. (Insert applicable law/regulation) indemnifies my actions – so f**k you.
