He said his only fear was that he would let down the Parachute Regiment…’

A hand salute for a brave man and patriot :!:

My late father fought with the British paras in Holland during WW II when they were a division strong. At one point in the September, 1944 operation, his unit of paratroopers were ordered up the Rhine to cover the withdrawal of about 2,000 British paras from Armheim, where they went the famous bridge too far and ended up in the middle of some very pissed off German armored troops, who shot the hell out of them, although the paras returned the favor.

Anyhow, the G.I.s went beyond their orders that fateful night and crossed the river and formed a defensive position on the other side. When the British approached their lines it was a very tense moment, as the paras thought the Americans were on the “safe” side of the river. The tension soon ended and the paras quickly ran through the line and took the boats to safety. The Americans then withdrew before the Germans army figured out what was happening.

    Mission accomplished :!: http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_good.gif

The G.I.s had expected the paras to be all beat up, bloody and weaponless; however, aside from some of the wounded they all had their guns, albeit little or no ammunition, their faces were clean shaven, and the uniforms reasonable clean. In contrast, the Sad Sack American paratroopers were dirty, smelly, growing beards and their uniform were muddy, bloody and ripped to pieces :!:

I understand a reporter from the G.I. newspaper “Stars and Stripes” when he saw the British and Americans returning to base on trucks made the remark that the British were very brave to have rescued the beat up American troops from the German armored soldiers.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_yahoo.gif
