Creeping tyranny, and barely a murmur of dissent:

NZ:
‘Dangers for democracy in today’s cyber bullying law
Every MP, bar one, will vote this afternoon for a piece of legislation that seeks to protect those being “harmed” by material on the internet. But the Harmful Digital Communications Bill is being widely criticised as dangerous in the way it seeks to regulate online activities.
…Although originally introduced by Judith Collins, it is now being pushed though Parliament by Amy Adams..’
And there you have it – two stupid, arrogant assholes who confuse their taxpayer-funded responsibilities with playing mommy to a bunch of dumb little girls who don’t know how to reach for the “off” button. Far easier for these indoctrinated wombles to claim that they’re “offended or “hurt”. And mommy comes to the rescue. Never mind free speech – the poor dears must be protected from reality, whatever the cost to democracy and liberty. *spit*

Kudos to David Seymour for voting his conscience with this one. I wonder if he’d do the same if the count was 61-60 in favour, and his single vote would kill this wretched piece of ill-advised, ill-conceived tyranny?

One thing that both amazes and terrifies me in discussions about this law, is the reaction I get when I say there is no such thing as a “right not to be offended”. People simply do not understand that offence is not given, it is taken, and this law is a massive infringement on my basic right to freely express my beliefs and opinions. Fucking sheep in this once-great little nation.

The same thing frightens the hell out of me too, Gantt.
The progs have won, I guess. People have been so dumbed-down that to argue the point about this kind of thing requires one to – in effect – educate them first.

It is a nasty fool of a law as it is written, but, it will prove to be unenforceable. Why? It requires “intent” to be actionable. How on earth can the intent of a distant anonymous writer be routinely established? This Act will only create arguments and will not attain anything close to what the legislation wants…rest easy!

        • KG says:

Phew! Thanks, Cad. It doesn’t make the framers and sponsors of it smell any better though.

        • Wombat says:

What law ever had to be enforceable.

The government gets a pretense to drag you into court, drag you through the mud, drag thousands of dollars out of your pocket and then when a “not guilty” verdict seems imminent they can drop the case in order to avoid setting a precedent and walk away laughing.

Aside all that, you think anyone will be paying attention when they quietly make an amendment here and there in six months time to shore up the “loopholes”?

I’ve given up with the younger generations; they just do not “want” to listen to what is happening to their freedoms. The older gits have just accepted that everything has turned to hell in a hand basket and now want to retire from all this: have enough money, will be OK kind of attitude. I suppose I’m in that group in that I’m beginning not to care about what is going on and will only have to look after myself for the next couple of decades. The boat has been re-engined and all systems are working well so summer will be spent on the water (I’m going to have to learn to fish!) and winter reading at the bach. What our politicians do or don’t do will not make a bit of difference to me; they have always destroyed the buying power of the dollar anyway through their ignorance/political expedience and one has to take that into account when planning.

A good example of why the population does not have the intellect to elect representatives who know how to manage a country is the current situation in Greece. Promise the idiots everything and they will vote for you. However the money will always run out and this is the first of many countries that are going to default on their loan repayments. We’re in for a bumpy ride. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_mail.gif

Sigh. The cardinal rule of blogging is DON’T FEED THE TROLLS!

So Amy Adams provides them with a giant bucket of pig-swill…

Wait, I just read where it was passed 116-to-5 in the NZ parliament?

I’m beginning to believe that there’s some kind of alien space radiation that’s causing a kind of world wide insanity.
