Does anyone remember the old BBC miniseries, I, Claudius? It was about the 4th emperor of the Roman Empire who hated the empire and wanted the Republic restored. Of course, this could not happen…too late for many reasons. This days I understand how Claudius felt: I’m a republican trapped in an empire.
