Dammit

The author and newspaper columnist AA Gill has died at the age of 62, following a brief battle with cancer.
..”He was the heart and soul of the paper. His wit was incomparable, his writing was dazzling and fearless, his intelligence was matched by compassion. Adrian was a giant among journalists…”    Link
His restaurant reviews were sometimes scathing, sometimes very funny and always informed and entertaining. But Wabbit’s favourite piece is this:
‘Towton, the bloodbath that changed the course of our history’
The man sure could write!

He sure could. I just dug out his 2002 book “AA Gill is Away” for another read. Rip. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_good.gif

A very good read, very well written. I knew nothing about the battle. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_unsure.gif

…Henry (V) had never shown anything other than disgust and incomprehension at the idea of hiding the pink sceptre. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_scratch.gif

    A superior peice of writing!

  4. Darin says:

“The Man could sure write” I’ll say-

” Any terrified peasant could point and pull a trigger, but it took a lifetime of aching, deforming practice to muscle up the 100lb of tug needed to draw a yew bow to dispatch a cloth yard of willow-shafted, goose-feathered, bodkin-tipped arrow 200 yards through plate, through chain, through leather and linen and prayers, into a man’s gizzard. The longbow was the most lethally efficient dealer of death on European battlefields until the invention of rifling and the Gatling gun.”

In 1973 I was driven down that road in a Bedford van by a very new girlfriend who lived in Leeds. I recall her telling me about the battle but at 20 years old I was more interested in other things… Lovely piece of countryside despite its tragic past. Is there ever a winner in a civil war?
