The things that struck me most when I came to New Zealand was the lack of birdsong and the total ignorance of New Zealanders about their trees and shrubs. This is coming from a country that had decades of a low level civil war where the ordinary citizen could still take out the alien plants in their garden and replant with natives – and the cities filled with birds and their song. That is what being green is about!

Just on an aside. I’m looking for a dog. So I started looking at the SPCA and dog rescue sites. Each and every one will only let you have a dog if you pay for the dog to be “desexed” i.e. castrated, and one of the reasons given is “to reduce their aggressiveness caused by testosterone”. This is despite enough research showing that by depriving young (male) dogs of testosterone they have massive physiological as well as psychological problems such as a lack of confidence which actually leads on to their “lashing” out and attacking people. This is just another example of how our feminised society is attacking masculinity…..and yet these women (I’ve met a few) when they need to have a hysterectomy for medical reasons without fail ask to have their ovaries preserved.
