Interesting that the Shuttle main engines leave the pad at 100% power and then they are throttled back to 64% until it passes through the thick lower layers of the atmosphere where it experiences maximum dynamic stress.Once the stress reduces they give the command to “go with throttle up” where the engines are ran back up to 100% for the burn into orbit.Just before they make orbit the engines are throttled back down to 60% to maintain a maximum G loading of the Shuttle and crew of 3.5 G.

At 1hr 46m, Dunkirk is the shortest feature film Christopher Nolan has ever directed. And that’s not a bad thing at all.
I give that movie two thumbs up! I went to see it today and it sure worked for me!
The heroism of the British and French troops under the guns of the German military machine was awesome.
I was most impressed with the scenes of the British troops standing in long lines and under heavy Luftwaffe attack, patently waiting their turn to board ships back to England. No panic. No trying to jump the line. Solid English Yeomen with their Lee-Enfield .303s on their shoulders waiting their turn to step on the boat to home and safety, as though they were waiting in line for at the movie theater.
Churchill believed that only 30,000 British troops would make it back to England, but as it turned out most of the BEF – and many of the gallant and heroic Frenchmen who pulled the almost suicidal rear guard duty at Dunkirk got out of the trap alive.
The WW II generation – my father’s generation – was the greatest Western generation ever, an era where “Valor under fire was a common virtue.” They were the giants – and we are the little people looking up to them.

Nolan does have a tendency to ramble in his films. Another 2.5- 3hr epic was not appealing.
From the stills I’ve seen, the troops looked too clean-shaven and clean, their steel helmets too uniformly clean and un-dented for them to be convincing.
Yes, but the troops you saw were just sent from England as reinforcements to the BEF, which was in a head long retreat back to the Channel.
I mean, the War Ministry in London – like the Pentagon – does make mistakes!
But seriously those guys in the English Channel as a result of their ships being sunk and covered with burning oil while being shot up by the Luftwaffe sure looked convincing – and pretty bloody dirty.
Great movie. Gritty.
Showcased the civilian call to service and concomitant bravery.
If you haven’t read it Paul Gallico’s “The Snow Goose” is about that civilian response. A childhood favourite!
