No residents of the street could enter or leave their abodes as all perambulations on the street ceased. The voice-over explained while the act was illegal, authorities decided not to intervene.’       source

Of course you’re free. Provided you simply ignore a few minor details such as:
The government can spy on your internet use. And censor it.
Monitor your emails. Tap your telephone. Monitor your financial affairs. Keep track of your overseas travel. Search your home and vehicle. Bug your home and vehicle. Demand that you supply details of your living arrangements, and the number, gender and ages of those living with you. Share both your medical history and your bank account details between government agencies. Demand that you provide proof that your possessions were legally obtained. (unless you’re a member of a gang, that is).  Stop you when going about your lawful business, without reasonable cause. Decide under what circumstances and with what weapons you’re allowed to defend your family.
And that’s before we even get to the plethora of rules and regulations dreamed up  (and enforced at your expense) by local councils….
This is an argument I had with somebody I work alongside. When these facts were pointed out to him, the best he could come up with was “well, the government doesn’t stop me doing the things I want to do.”
Which brings to mind Erich Honeker’s famous words: “of course our people (East Germans) are free–they’re free to do anything that isn’t expressly forbidden”
If battery hens could speak, no doubt they’d be saying something similar.

Britain:
‘A scrounging family-of-12 who rake in a staggering £95,000 year in benefits have been re-homed in a £1,000-a-week four-bedroom house – after trashing the last one.
Jobless Sam, 36, and Pete Smith, 40, have been given the new house in Bristol to house their brood.
The family were kicked out of their previous four-bedroom home in picturesque Bath after a £20,000 wrecking spree left it unfit for human habitation.
It was left in such a foul state that children’s mattresses and walls were stained with human and animal excrement, floors were mouldy and rat droppings littered the floor.
But instead of being reprimanded, the couple were housed in a four-bedroom house in nearby Bristol – which they have already set about trashing.
The case highlights Britain’s shambolic benefits system, which allows the Smiths to trouser a staggering £44,824 a year in benefits alone.
On top of that, their £960 a week rent is also paid, which is so high because their breakfast is delivered every day.
The annual rent tops £49,920 – meaning their total annual cost to the taxpayer is an incredible £94,744.
The list of handouts include: £140 a week child benefits, £120 a week disability living allowance, £250 a month carers allowance for Peter, £527 a week in tax credits, £30 every fortnight for income support.
But mum-of-ten Sam – who hasn’t worked in over a decade – has complained her current home is not big enough and her family is not given enough financial help.
She also whinged the family has to prepare their own breakfast, which is delivered to their doorstep for free.‘

In Federal District Court on July 20, 2010, the ATF won a conviction from an Austin jury that defies logic and reason. In a trial before Federal Judge Sam Sparks, government lawyers conceded Texas resident Paul Copeland did not know his buyer was an illegal alien, but the jury they should convict him anyway because he “had reasonable cause to believe” he was selling to an illegal alien because the two men and a boy who were present at his table at the time of the sale: 1) were Hispanic, 2) spoke Spanish, and 3) wore cowboy clothing. And the jury did as asked. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jennifer Freel acted as lead prosecutor in the case.
