Did Muhammad Exist?

Perhaps not a silly question. Go take a look at I.M.Fletcher’s comment HERE
I’ll go look for more details on Spencer’s book.
Update: More details here.

I have no problem accepting the fact that he is a historical figure. Even one who actually had a sincere spirituality in his early life in Mecca, wanting to reform the Arab paganism and worship of idols in the Kabba.
There is also no doubt,in my mind, that very little of his beliefs are original. Any reading of the Koran will confirm that. It is largely inspired by Judaism and Christianity. He clearly had quite a knowledge of both and of course that cannot be a surprise. Mecca was a trading city and Mohameds people were traders. He had contact with both those religions. In fact the Kabba is Abrahamic as are so many other Islamic holy sites. So Islam is based firmly on those 2 older religions,in the same way of course that Christianity is based on Judaism.
Mohamed left Mecca and became almost accidently a war lord. This is his later period. Now he has an army and must justify the violence and plunder. Off to the cave again. God says it’s OK. Jihad, sword the rest, as they say is history.
This split in Mohameds life is the cause of a lot of the confusion around Islam. Early days,he is a reformer,he has no army ,is quite spiritual ,respectful of the other religions ie Ch and JU,people of the Book Jesus is a prophet etc all the lines that the apologists like to trot out.Charity, regular prayer, etc
Later days he becomes a warlord zealot with a plundering ,maruading army that does what desert thieves do,steal, rape ,murder etc. Got to keep the troops happy,so we come up with the formula that God says its OK. Same with all those other controversies about how many wives, sex with slaves ,slaughtering your enemies, especially the local Jews who refused to join him………that’s where anti Semetic, throat slitting and wife stealing comes from..,but that’s OK God said so.
I find the following resourse very useful as it was written long before the PC era.Non Catholics, please hold your noses .
