The action is stiff, as expected, and instead of the traditional blued finish it has a matt-black coating. That’s ok, but the woodwork is pretty ugly.

      FINALLY!http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_yahoo.gif

      How long did that take?

      • KG says:

9 months and $500 in fees, Ronbo.

        • Ronbo says:

          @KG:

The government fees there are OUTRAGEOUS!

I checked out that same the costs on that same rifle here in the USA – and the fees/dealers costs vary from state to state, but here in Washington state it’s about $100 above the price of the Marlin, which is $430 plus state sales tax.

I just needs some break in to loosten her up. Eh, the rifle that is…

  3. KG says:

Horrible woodwork, Ronbo–I might just paint it. It’s already had a trigger job but I haven’t dry-fired it yet.

    • Ronbo says:

      @KG:

This rifle had a previous owner?

When I was in the Army and stationed in Virginia in 1970, I bought a fixer upper jungle version” of an ancient Lee Enfield for $19.95 at gun shop. I put on a new stock and blued the barrel and sold it to a buddy for about $100.

This rifle may have been to a couple of wars, but it was the best bolt action rifle I ever owned and I liked the large 10 round magazine.

  4. KG says:

Just did–looks like I’ll have to do my own trigger job, dammit.

  5. KG says:

No, it’s brand new, Ronbo. I think Remington took over Marlin and they’re just not the same quality they used to be.
The Lee-Enfield jungle carbine is worth a lot of money nowadays. I gave one away and regretted it ever since.

  6. Darin says:

Marlin has gone downhill in quality since they were bought out by Remmington.A lot of Marlins best hands left and scattered throughout the industry when that happened and it shows. It’s sad what happened to them

Have you seen the Marlin Owners webpage?
    http://www.marlinowners.com/index.php

Probably find some folks on there with some pointers.Shame you aren’t close,we could work that thing over in an afternnon.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_mail.gif

  7. KG says:

    Thanks for the link, Darin.
Yep, it’s a shame–we could have had some fun doing it. I reckon it’s about a 12 beer job…..

  8. Darin says:

Gotta send you some pics of my Grandfather’s 16ga Belgian double I just finished last week.Got a little trigger work to do yet and I’m still waiting on the proper shells for it.

    • KG says:

Sounds great. I’m a sucker for a good shottie. My short Mossberg pumpie isn’t elegant though.

  9. WebWrat says:

Shot my first deer at 9 years with a Marlin 30-30, KG. Used it for skin shooting until meat recovery started in ’64. Tried .270, 243, 303, 7mm and others but settled on .222 BSA as the number one meat shooter – head and neck shots.

Boo-booed one day and shot a deer in the arse with the .222 but still got paid for clean meat … buyers didn’t see the hole!!

    • KG says:

      G’day Ratty.
I’m a fan of the .222 (well, I’m a fan of anything that goes bang) but it had to be a compromise. The land around here is mostly flat so I didn’t want something with too much “legs”.
And the pig hunting is in fairly thick scrub, very aggro boars. Up to 40 pigs at a time in gangs and I wanted a close-range stopper.
The guy over the road from us is a pro ‘roo shooter and he uses a .222 Sako. Like you, all head shots (by spotlight though).

      • WebWrat says:

Yeah … a lot of mine was night shooting as well.

I bought a 357 mag/38 Special lever action a year ago … be ideal for pigs ….. if I had time!!

  10. Oswald Bastable says:

If you pull a lever action apart, they often are stiff in the action until you fire it.

Had that with my last Marlin.

    • KG says:

That’s good to know, Oswald. Here’s hoping….there was still swarf in the chamber of this one.
Gecko’s little .357Mag Marlin was good from the word go but this one sure isn’t. Hers was made by Marlin, though.

  11. KG says:

    Just downloaded both videos.

  12. Oswald Bastable says:

Newish 30-30 ammo with better ballistics

    • KG says:

I had a look at it, but I can’t justify the extra expense over the Remington Core-Lokt for a fairly small improvement.
If I was reloading I’d look at it though.

      • Ronbo says:

        @KG:

I noticed on the Marlin website that they take international orders – and I’d bet other gun manufacturers here in the States do the same thing – so my question to you is, “How big of an armory are you putting together.”

Like my old West Virginia dad used to say, “Son, a mountain man can’t have too many guns.”

        • KG says:

 My answer to people who ask why so many guns is:
so, would you expect to play golf with just one club?
