Both links are spot on,friends of mine in various industries have talked about this over and over since 9/11,just how wide open we are.But one comment says it best-

“America enjoys this robust supply system because 1) we are industrious people who Get Things Done, and Getting Things Delivered is a condition of Done, and 2) because our rear area — CONUS — has historically been one of the most secure places on earth. It’s not secure because it is a fortress or because of outstanding security forces. It’s secure because it is full of Americans.

When Americans are no longer on the side of protecting that supply train, then Bad Things happen. When a small percentage of Americans are on the side of disrupting that supply train, it will derail.”

    True words all.

    • KG says:

Absolutely. Few people give a thought to just how fragile the things they take for granted–water, sewage disposal, power–are.
The crucial point is not that they can be disrupted all across the country. Rather, that a group of people, by disabling just a few areas can then wield a very large stick indeed against the government with the threat to disable more.

      • Oswald Bastable says:

FAR more fragile than most would imagine. It’s a full time battle just to keep them going.

I could take out a cities water for days if not weeks with a hammer. A few hard to replace and essential parts…

    Two things I find interesting.

The gold price has apparently dropped in the last week or two.
Puzzling, as I would expect it to rise in a time of uncertainty like now. ( It may possibly just be short-term profit-taking…. )

Secondly – the chart on that page showing US gasoline retail sales. They are *plunging!* Why???

    • KG says:

Historically, gas sales have broadly tracked economic conditions, Thor.
And the economy is in much worse shape than the official figures suggest.

      • thor42 says:

        Ah…. thanks for that, KG!
Yeah, if that graph is any indication, the economy is in *really* bad shape.

        • Darin says:

That and refineries are switching to their Summer formulations which are cheaper to produce.

And people mistakenly believe that Winter is over even though Kansas just experienced a whopping 57f temperature drop in one day.It was 74f Monday and hit a balmy 17f there Tuesday. This came with 20″ of wet Snow and a good 2″ layer of ice.

Yup,Global warming definitely put an end to Winters here.
