Wabbit is fed up with the Marlin pumping out 1:4 flyers, so I’m ordering a Remington 700 SPS stainless in .243 (and getting two inches lopped off the barrel)

Try crowning the muzzle on the marlin. A ball bearing on a rod and a bit of grinding paste does wonders.

    • KG says:

      Hmmm….thanks Os. Interesting thread.
The flyers are one problem, the lack of drop at the butt is the other. There are no aftermarket stocks available and I don’t have a woodworking shop any more to alter this one.

  2. Oswald Bastable says:

Can’t go wrong with the Remmie, anyway. My 6mm shoots near 1/2 MOA, with the right hand loads.

  3. KG says:

It’ll be a lot noisier after the gunny removes 2″ from the barrel.

I am a Range Officer at the NZDA so I see quite a good selection of rifles.I regret to say that the quality of the modern Marlins leaves a lot to be desired.
In the 10 odd years of being on the range I can’t recall a single instance that I ever saw a Marlin group that impressed.
My rifle is a Mauser – Werke Obendorf W. – Germany Model 225 in .243. Brutally handsome and wickedly accurate.

    • KG says:

I didn’t mind the Marlin’s inability to shoot a tight group, RB–although the .357 Magnum Marlin my beloved Gecko had certainly could.
For pig hunting in thick scrub at fairly close range, that simply doesn’t matter. That’s what lever guns excel at. But the odd flyer is just bloody irritating.
The shortened Remmie should be ok, and I don’t care about the slight loss of velocity and accuracy, since nobody here shoots pigs at more than 150 yards anyway.
      The Mauser sounds nice.

  5. Darin says:

I dunno,I am a bit turned off by Remington the company that FUBARed Marlin and H&R.I don’t think they are the same company as they once where.

What makes are available down there?

Glenn Beck is on location (Moore, Oklahoma) on the radio talking about the Mother Nature’s blitz of the plains – the word up is that FEMA has not arrived – but the Oklahoma National Guard, The Salvation Army, numerous Christian churches, the Minuteman militia, and just plain common citizens are pulling people out of the rubble.

The national chain HOME DEPOT in Moore has opened its doors and is GIVING away its stock to people in need, which is just about everyone in this area (Those greedy capitalist :!: How dare they :?: ) No looting has been reported (Those peaceful and honest Bible Belt Christians, what is wrong with you people? In New Orleans not many years ago when the Katrina hurricane wrecked the city, the survivors had a merry old time looting, raping and shooting) :|

And local Oklahoma police are HELPING people, instead of looting the stores and/or stealing the loot that the non-uniformed looters had already looted, as was the case in New Orleans in 2005.

WHAT’S WRONG WITH THESE OKLAHOMA PEOPLE!!! :|

DON’T THEY KNOW YOU SIT DOWN AND STARVE UNTIL FEMA SHOWS UP :!:

    • KG says:

Pretty much any make, Darin. The gunsmith I like dealing with is a Remington man (he builds custom guns based on the 700 action) but he’s also selling Savage rifles and reckons they’re accurate, tough and great value.

  6. MikeH. says:

The Remington 700 series is an outstanding rifle right from the box. However, there is a long-time safety question about their trigger / safety group. Play it safe and buy a drop-in aftermarket trigger group.

    MikeH.

    • KG says:

Thanks, Mike. I have to admit, safety isn’t a top priority for me. (My Marlin won’t pass the drop test after the trigger job I did on it).
      I’ve been offered a new Tikka .243 for $1100, and I’m tempted…

      • rivoniaboy says:

Seen quite a few on the Range. Seem to be a quality firearm and pretty accurate.Worth a closer look.

        • KG says:

I think only about a 60 degree bolt lift too, Rivoniaboy, although I’m not sure of that.

For those who were discussing von Holder earlier and his Gestapo-like activities Breitbart has a summary of the Obama administrations threatening tactics towards the people of the USA.

    • Ronbo says:

      Excellent summary :!:

Like Glenn Beck said yesterday, 2013 marks Stage Two of an Obama led Communist coup against the American Republic.

Folks, it’s going to get worse day by day now – and whether or not the Patriots want to recognize the fact – it’s either fight, or go quietly to the concentration camps in Stage Three.

Stage Three is “The Night of The Long Knives” when the lights go out in America….perhaps forever.

Obama means to be the American Lenin long before 2017 – and he will be – unless We The People rally and stop him.

Are you with the Second American Revolution, or against it :?:

Yo KG……you are a slow learner! I have a Sako 85 in a 243, very sweet. Tikka’s are great value for money – you should get MOA out of the box. Good triggers as well. The only budget yank brand I would consider is a Savage: Ever thought of the new 6.5 Creedmoor?

    • KG says:

Slow learner? Why do you say that, Fish? (not that I’m offended–in some areas I can be a slow learner–or stubborn)

The situation out here, and other places we like to go, is a lot different to a keen gun owner who lives in or close to a city. Ammo has to be available, spares aren’t and rifles and optics tend to get a very hard time.
I’ve had great service from Marlin rifles in the past but this particular one is a disappointment, that’s all. (and I don’t need MOA accuracy. The vulnerable region of a pig is large enough that a three inch group@100m is just fine)

  10. The Gantt Guy says:

hmmm. The IRS has police guarding their premises, as almost half of Americans are ready to impeach King Barry over the targeting of Conservative groups.

Maybe ronbo is right. 2013 is double-or-nothing time for King Barry and his cotere of communist conmen?

  11. KG says:

But it’s interesting how the bastards can run for the protection of the Constitution they despise so much when it suits:

  12. mawm says:

This is sickening. The leftist turds on the local councils, the police and the government have been so indoctrinated by the accusations of racism any time a non-white person has been censured for doing something wrong that they cannot protect their own any longer. Disgusting.

More than 2,400 children and young people were confirmed to have been victims of sex abuse gangs in just 14 months………….

…………..police forces are investigating 54 alleged child grooming gangs

    • KG says:

Unless and until the parents of these children (and people who still have some moral fibre left) take matters into their own hands, nothing will change.
There’ll be the usual committees and blather and much bureaucratic doublespeak, but the bottom line is: Nothing will change.
Lynch a few muzzies from a lamp post in Bradford, and things would change pretty damn fast.

Most of the article is based on bullshit, Robert.
First, it was acidification that was killing the reef. Then fertilizer runoff. Then the crown of thorns starfish. Then global warming. None of those things have had a long-term effect on the reef’s health.
Now the greenie’s latest bogeyman, the export coal industry.
The whole damn article could have been written by the greens and put out as a press release. In fact, it probably was.
The object of this crap isn’t to protect the reef so much as cripple coal exports, a goal the greens are openly committed to.

      • mawm says:

I’ve seen the damage the “crown of thorns” can cause. For some reason there was a massive explosion of them around the world but they seem do be dying off – probably being killed by the Giant Triton. Nature has its own assassins.

“I noticed some of the online vendors here offer international sales. What’s the process to order a gun in?”
Easy–I just pay the gunsmith and he orders it.

  14. KG says:

He’d just charge me the fee, Darin. Or I can pay the vendor and they send it to him.
I’ve got a Mossy 12g pump being looked after for me in NZ–I love it.
