Patrick O’Brian

(Author of Master and Commander, which was butchered by Hollywood) ) I just finished reading his “H.M.S. Surprise”. Brilliant!  Just dazzling. The intention was to just dip into it and save the book for later…six hours later I put it down. His descriptions of India leave C.S. Forester for dead.

O’Briens books are outstanding. I’m on my third odyssey through them.

It is a fair while since I read C. S. Forester but I cannot think of any of his books in which he mentioned India, apart perhaps from mentioning that Lady Barbara had visited the place when her brother was Viceroy.
Perhaps you can enlighten me on where Forester does describe India?
On the other hand I really don’t think O’Brian can compete with Forester for descriptions of Naval life under sail. Still, everyone to their own taste.

I meant E.M. Forster, Alwyn. Early morning, not enough coffee, packing up and booking out of the hotel are my excuses. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_wacko.gif

I thought Master and Commander was okay considering Hollywood. It did bring home the reality of life at sea during those times IMO.

Gonna checkout his other works when I get time to read something other than parts books and software manuals

Just checked and the local library has plenty, but they are never on the shelves-always out!
