I drove the 700km to pick it up today and took it out this evening to try it out. It shoots a 3/4″ group at 75 yards (over the hood of the Hilux) and I was delighted to find it has a floated barrel (standard on these rifles) and somebody has done a superb job on the trigger. It loads easily and feeds smoothly.
All this for $500!

Not bad,not bad at all
Ammo is starting to show up on the shelves here again, you know what that means
I do!
I figure this thing was so cheap because the barrel needs re-blueing and because people here have gone overboard for stainless and synthetic rifles.
Next, I’ll try some 100g and see if it’s as accurate as the 80g….all things being equal, I prefer a heavier projectile.
Yes,people go nuts over stock finish and “pretty”,but some of the best rifles I have ever shot looked positively fugly. One in particular was an M-1 Garand,it looked like it had been drug down the road behind a truck everyday since 1943,but would hold a 2″ group at 200 yards.
That Winchy should have a 1:10 twist rate and should stabilize either weight round, though the 80g will probably still be more accurate shooting Copper jacketed rounds. If you can find some Bronze jacketed ammo then the numbers will possibly improve for both.
The PMC Bronze line is good stuff, don’t know if they make it in .243 though.
I haven’t seen it here, Darin. Not even advertised.
Absolute accuracy isn’t all that important, given that it’s just a hunting rifle. As Chuck Hawks says…”how much accuracy is enough?”.
Interesting scope it has…an illuminated reticule Hakko Black Hawk.
mmmmmmm…a Garand…sigh.
That’s better!!! Is it 243?…..
Yep, it is, Fish. The smallest caliber I’ve ever used for hunting, except when I was a kid.
