Open house

We just drove 300km for a pub meal then 300km home. Great fun in the dark, dodging ‘roos and pigs and camels….

I bet John Key is salivating at the prospect of inflicting this on Kiwis, just as that Labor party bastard Conroy tried to do in Australia.

        @KG:

You and your wife drove 186 miles each way for a beer and a meal :?:  In one day :?:

Fish and chips washed down by a pint of Foster, I hope :?:

BTW, was the road paved and how many 7-11 stores on the route? You realized that from Orlando to Jacksonville, Florida is about the same distance, and you don’t have to dodge the creepy critters on the Interstate, just the “Bears” – the Florida Highway Patrol. :!:

        • KG says:

 The road was mostly sealed, Ronbo. Sort of.
No stores between here and there. No traffic, either. Which is the way we like it. Just quiet conversation, the occasional evasive manoeuvre and watching the odometer tick over.
I had the 30-30 in the car but shooting pigs in the spotlights didn’t seem very sporting, so we didn’t.
Now I’m off to bed, after a few (Carlton) beers.

  2. Findalis says:

Just wondering. Is it camel season yet? They are tasty when roasted.

    • KG says:

Always camel season here, Findalis. But it’d take the two of us six months to eat one, so they’re not shot by me.

        186 miles without a GAS STATION :?:

        Awesome road trip :!:

This reminds me of the Dalton Highway in Alaska that runs from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay – The last 225 miles, which are above the Arctic Circle, have no gas stations/stores.

It will come as no surprise that the Dalton is rated as the most dangerous highway in the United States. I had some Army buddies stationed at Ft. Richardson who drove the Dalton in tactical military vehicles designed for bad roads – or no roads – and more than a few either broke down, or were involved in accidents before the column reached Prudhoe Bay – AND THIS WAS IN SUMMER :!:

        • Darin says:

Ron.I have a couple buddies that did the AlCan highway run on bikes in Summer. They still woke up one morning in June with a good dusting of snow.I want to drive it myself oneday, but not on a bike.

      • Findalis says:

Have you ever heard of the Freezer and party BBQ?

        • KG says:

We don’t do social events, Findalis, and have very limited freezer space.
If we had more freezer space, I’d simply buy a prime beef beast for about $80.

  3. Contempt says:

 ! No Comancheros on that 600km voyage? Did you drive the conestoga? Josey Wales? John Wayne?

    • Ronbo says:

      @Darin:

Hey now, June in Alaska is still spring – and like the song goes, “When it’s springtime in Alaska, it’s 40 below…”

Indeed, that part was likely the Yukon Province in Canada – we are talking interior – where summer doesn’t even start until late June; however, my buddies at Ft. Richardson said the best time to do the Alcan is in the middle of winter, because the gravel road freezes over and our Canadian cousins keep it snow plowed. Of course, you want to take it easy on the brakes – in fact – don’t use the brakes if you have standard shift, just down shift and keep the speed down to around 40 – 45 MPH.

Oh! and be sure to have your U.S. Army issued arctic gear, except for the parka, on at all times…just in case you shoot off the road into the ice and snow.

Seriously, the Alcan takes no prisoners in the winter, you freeze in no time without the proper clothing and boots :!:

The Canadians have enough gas/store stops along their part of the Alcan, because some are not Club Med, like the guy who told me he stopped at this little Canadian gas station/store and noticed they had a cooked food menu, so he ordered the “whole fried chicken.” The woman owner/clerk/attendant told him the fried chicken would take about an hour, but he was hungry for something besides the snacks in the car and he agreed.

So my friend, Sergeant Gary Farson, took a seat at the booth – the only booth in the store – and waited for his food. He looked out the window and saw the woman grab a chicken, kill it, and prepare it for the stove inside the store :!:  The chicken was quickly fried and the entire bird placed at his table along with a pint of good Canadian Moosehead beer.

Gary said it was the best fried chicken he ever ate :!:  You can say many nasty things about the Canucks, but their food is FRESH :!:  At least the fried chicken in the Yukon Province :!:

From Daniel Thomas at Cambrian Dissenters;-

    “The Trashing of London”.

The British political class and their establishment cronies have made it absolutely clear that the trashing of London and the replacement of the tradition British Anglo/Saxon/Celtic culture with mono-cultural ghettos at the behest of the Eurocrats, will continue apace. They sense that victory is almost at hand and the long planned post democratic United States of Europe will be a fact.

      From the article:
“..The problem is not so much that these individuals pop up every now and then, as every organization has its bad eggs, but rather that we see them passed on through the system, promoted and rewarded. If we are truly the elite organization we claim to be, how do we justify the fact that we allow these individuals to retain positions of immense influence, much less promote through the ranks? How do we justify this endemic tolerance for mediocrity or outright incompetence? ..”

Sounds horribly familiar to any soldier and ex-soldier.
