I remember the celebrations when Australia won the cup. It was a very big deal indeed.

This will always be associated with that win–the Aussie boat had this blaring from speakers as they were towed out to the course. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_yahoo.gif

  3. I was working in Australia at the time and that was great music and winning the cup was such a big deal then, and winning the America’s cup is still a big deal today. It is pure technology versus nature and unless you have the technology you simply don’t win it–America has just proven that.

I must admit, I prefer the old 12 metres, Conservative. Perhaps because it’s easier to relate to the tactics and techniques?
      The pre-start shenanigans were absorbing.
John Bertrand’s book “Born to Win” is a great read, too, and full of valuable lessons.

I’ve heard all sorts of nonsense the past couple of days about why and how Oracle Team USA won the America’s Cup. Almost all of it complete poppycock.

The fact is, Oracle Team USA did *not* win the America’s Cup. Emirates Team NZ LOST the America’s Cup. And it was lost because, like kiwi-flagged sports teams everywhere, and like kiwis in general, they would rather be thought “nice” than “effective”. Like so many kiwis, Emirates Team NZ have proven themselves mentally inferior to their competition. Dean Barker might win a competition to be the most likeable loser in the world, but he will never win an America’s Cup. Jimmy Spithill will likely never win a likeability competition. But he goes down as the most remarkable America’s Cup winner in history. Kiwis = mentally weak. Lacking the mongrel, the killer instinct so prevalent in our cousins from across the ditch. Better to lose nobly than win at any cost.

And, for those heaping bile on Russell Coutts, he is not a “traitor”. He is a “winner”. He has more of the Aussie instinct than the kiwi. Let me ask this: if Robbie Deans had led Australia to Rugby World Cup glory, would he too now be on the receiving end of your hatred? I guess it’s OK for top kiwi sportspeople, coaches and mentors to work for the opposition, so long as they lose!

And, to look on the bright side, I guess if Emirates Team NZ ceases to be the beneficiary of taxpayer largess it means the $36 million of taxpayer wedge can be redirected to its rightful home – the pockets of the corporate IWI. Let’s be honest, $36 million will placate, pacify or otherwise deal with a squadron of taniwha! http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_wacko.gif
