‘Don’t Oppress Me With Your Commas

More crushing injustice on campus, this time at the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies:
In a letter sent to colleagues in the department after the sit-in, [Professor] Rust said students in the demonstration described grammar and spelling corrections he made on their dissertation proposals as a form of “micro-aggression.” “I have attempted to be rather thorough on the papers and am particularly concerned that they do a good job with their bibliographies and citations, and these students apparently don’t feel that is appropriate,” Rust said in the letter.
You see, by highlighting spelling and punctuation errors, the professor is contributing to an “unsafe climate for students of colour.” Reminding students of the basic rules of English apparently helps to create “a hostile and toxic environment” in Professor Rust’s classroom. Such are the mental and emotional traumas of the modern grad school intellectual. These, remember, are people studying for master’s degrees and doctorates. Advanced learning….’

    Next to sociology, education departments are front running contenders as the rancid sewers of any university.

    My wife once took a post-grad program which required passing a course in a shyte smear called ‘fundamental pedagogics’ . Fortunately it was by distance and I was able to contribute to her assessments by, quite literally, writing absolute blathershit. Lots of split infinitives, three columns of jargon words with random selections from each, inverted paraphrasing of the ‘lecturer’s’ own material etc.. A lot of fun. Passed with ease.

    So there was a sit-in by the students, wow! Either things sure have changed since i was at college or this sort of baboons-running-the-joint thing is a unique characteristic of western institutions. If we had ever tried crap like a sit-in for being called out for our own stupidity, we’d be thrown out of said college onto our asses.

    The funny thing is that studying at a “good” American university these days costs around 4 or 5 times what you’d pay around here. I think a lot of American parents and their children are going to have to start asking some serious questions about the type of trash-masquerading-as-higher-education they’re paying for.

    You have all stated my take so=only will add =that=after teaching 10 years =I knew that the basics were being wiped out=so=I decided to Homeschool my child when he was still in my womb=
    Reading (phonics to start-thanks Darin for the video) Writing=Arithmetic= ART=MUSIC=Logic-LATIN (I learned it w/ him as it had already been taken out when I was in school)=\He was accepted to two of the most difficult institutions in the world to get in=
    Today=I never recommend any young person to enter a 4 year university-too much money = not enough sound education..

    Carol, the state of education today is such that sending a child to a gummint skool is simply child abuse.

    When education was totally in private hands you got the Age of Enlightenment, the American Revolution and the Industrial Revolution – with public education you get Communism, Nazism, the Holocaust and the GULAG :!:

    I’ve dropped the term “public schools” and “public education” in favor of “state schools” and “state education”.

    The term “public” still infers the notion that the subject of the term is community driven when in reality the state has less and less of anything positive to do with my community or anyone else’s.

    Community driven projects are generally pleasant and successful (despite the interference of the state) while state driven projects are typically massive, unwieldy affairs riddled with rank incompetence and budgetary blowouts.

    Hence I now use the term “state education”. It conjures up the reality of the situation far more accurately.
