‘Too scared to teach, men quit in droves

GROWING numbers of men are shunning teaching careers for fear of being falsely accused of child-sex offences.
What men bring to teaching is irreplaceable and this will have disastrous consequences. It probably already is.

I was a public (government) high school social studies (history, economics, civics) teacher in Melbourne, Florida from 1986 to 1989 (my first job after I retired from the military) and the FIRST thing the security Dean at Melbourne High School told all us new teachers was never, never, NEVER be alone in a classroom with a student, especial a male teacher and a female student.

The second thing was never, never, NEVER turn your back on your class, as teachers at Mel High were often hit in the back with wood blocks, bottles, spit wads, etc.

      Bring back the cane.

We couldn’t give them the cane, but we could call the cops :!:

One of my students beaned me with a coke can when I wasn’t looking, so I had him arrested for assault and battery by the police.

The school staff was unhappy because because I didn’t go thru the Dean and all that formal discipline jazz that would have taken weeks for resolution, but I’ll tell you what, after this kid was arrested in front of all his little buddies in my classroom and frog marched to the black&white in front of the entire school, I got respect and attention.

Another shock they received was that I graded in a fair and objective manner. This meant a considerable number failed my courses the first semester. SHOCKING :!: One girl even broke down and cried because it was the first class she ever failed.

After that the kids did better because the word got out they couldn’t skate or skip my classes.

I’d go so far as to say that trying to amounts to a particularly subtle and vicious (not to mention cowardly) form of child abuse.
