‘Panzerwagen’ for Kiwi roads……

322961093 2 We just bought this. When it comes to handling Kiwi drivers, there’s no substitute for mass…..

    • Mine used to say that if the incoming (small arms) fire was heavy and unusually accurate, the troops were likely SS. He detested them, but acknowledged their fighting ability.

  1. If you want to mess with peoples heads, stick two Kiwi flags on the front fenders

  2. It’s the 3 litre 24v version, but it’ll still be far from frisky. Two tons takes time to get rolling….
Cheap to buy and cheap to fix, though.

      • Gas. The Kiwi system of buying diesel permits or coupons or something drives me nuts.
And in the long run I’m not at all sure that a diesel is any cheaper to own. A damn sight more expensive to fix, too.
Oh, and that’s “Klatterwagen”, thank you.

        • Boss had a Diesel once, parts weren’t bad,but simple things like changing the oil took half a day and a lot of cursing.

          • Too right. Being a simple sort, I like to keep stuff simple and easy.
Mind you, getting at the oil filter on this model is a bit of a pain. The big plus is an abundance of cheap spares, both new and used. Much cheaper than a Jap car.

            • I really want to build one of these,it’s not practical transportation, but who cares. The Cummins 4bt will run fine on straight, used cooking oil which I can get for free.

I have the engine, turbo and inter cooler, just having a hard time finding a good solid rolling chassis.Might end up with a new model Bronco, but I really like the old ones better.

  3. Very cool indeed! What about a real truck chassis? Something primitive. It’s not as though you’d run it at Daytona, is it?
Or maybe an old F100….

    • If I can find one I could get a fiberglass hard top for the Bronco for cheap and paint it to match.I mainly want something like this for a cruiser, comfortable on the road, but will still tote a camper trailer with ease.Would be nice to knock off work on a Thursday, haul ass to Tennessee or Alabama and spend Friday/Sat fishing, hunting whatever and take my time coming home Sunday.

I could do this with a Ranger, but they aren’t real good long distance, too cramped for my liking.Another option would be a Jeep Wagon, but they are a PITA to find parts for.

      • I’d have thought for a guy your size, a Western Star with a sleeper cab would be a good fit. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_mail.gif

        • No,no semis for me,been there done that bought the t-shirt

I don’t have any problems with smaller trucks and SUVs,it’s cars that kill me.Stupid things they build now,you have to be a midget contortionist to get in and out of one.

  4. “…cheap to fix…”

That’s good. I dabbled in European a long time ago and regret not listening to advice at the time. My Dad only got his garage back when I got married and moved out.

  5. there’s no substitute for mass…..

Hmmm….. The problem is that there are others on the road who have got wise and drive even bigger cars than that. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_cool.gif

  6. Cars today, just don’t have a soul, they lack the style and grace of a more civilized time when form and function combined with high art. Duesenberg made such legends.

It’s not everyday we see an absolute work of art that is capable of cruising at 140mph-

  7. You’ll love it, KG. Everything about driving a Mercedes is delightful except for the mechanic’s bills. In particular, I glory in the envy-fueled sneers of the Prius drivers.

  8. “In particular, I glory in the envy-fueled sneers of the Prius drivers.”
And quite properly, too, Francis.
We’ve had a few W124 Benzes and they’ve been fine, reliable and comfortable cars. Since I do the work myself, mechanic’s bills aren’t a problem. The 124 is simple enough, after all.
It’s a lot of car for less than $3000.

  9. It’s like a tank. Ugly but a good conversaton piece. Enjoy all the service lights that never stop coming on (from my experience with A BMW, anyway). Happy driving. It is kind of cool.

    • The W124 series Benzes don’t suffer from that kind of thing, Lara. They’re simple and very, very reliable. I’ve owned five of them now and never had a problem.
It’s the top-selling Mercedes of all time–not bad for an “ugly” car….. ;-)

  10. “They’re simple and very, very reliable. ”
    I’ll second that.
And you get a lot of car for the money.
Daughter in law in Melbourne has one, a wagon. It carried 4 of us plus luggage and supplies from Melbourne to Mildura and back in absolute style. A joy to drive, set cruise control and enjoy.
And yes, I do realise Melb to Mildura is just a trip to the shops up your way.

    • I’m going to miss these long, straight and mostly empty roads, MvL.
“And you get a lot of car for the money.” You sure do. We’ve reached the point where unless we need a 4wd (and out West here we do) we wouldn’t buy anything else.
