Open house

In a totally eventless universe, would time till exist? The answer won’t help reduce the cost of groceries, but Wabbit is curious.

    • Hmm..perhaps that in itself is simply an assumption, because we can’t conceive of time in any other way?

  1. A totally eventless universe isn’t possible unless you believe in classical thermodynamics and the heat death of the Universe, which doesn’t factor in the effect of Gravity as the dominate force at play in the macroscale.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_mail.gif

A better question is,if Golf were declared to be against Sharia law, would Obama finally get serious in wacking terrorists?

    • I’m not interested in whether an eventless universe is possible Darin.
For the purpose of my question, it’s simply assumed. ;-)

  2. From the human standpoint, the question is unanswerable. We cannot conceive something as existing or not existing if we cannot perceive, detect, or measure it – and we perceive and measure time by perceiving events in sequence and the intervals between them. In other words, we would have no conception of “time” as such.

But humans, or any other perceiving creatures, could not exist in an eventless cosmos, because to perceive is to experience a change – an event. So I wouldn’t worry too much about this puzzler.

    • I wondered why I woke at 2am with the question fully formed, Francis. After getting up and several coffees later it was still nagging at me.

  3. The beauty of the universe is Infinite. We have the Hubble telescope and a more recent one which can “see” 20 light years distance in Creation. Look at images from Hubble. These telescopes have yet to record a stop sign even at 20 light years or much less a dead end road – we do that ourselves. I do not have to understand this fact; only accept it.

  4. Thanks for the answers.
I need to frame the question better, methinks. Something like ‘does time simply exist, or is it brought into existence by events?’
    I need more mental horsepower.

  5. People deserve to know that alcohol gives most of us a higher life expectancy—even if consumed above recommended limits.

…the evidence that abstinence from alcohol is a cause of heart disease and early death is irrefutable…..

    And…

The more alcohol a society consumes, the fewer alcohol-related problems and alcohol-related deaths (including cirrhosis) it has, since these societies, such as those in Southern Europe, integrate drinking with social life.

But binge drinking is still bad.
