Great performer, though he pinched this one off Ray Charles who recorded it in 1961.
It was the theme tune in the movie ‘Ray’. Cocker covered many songs that were hits for
other artists, notably ‘The Letter’, which was a huge hit for the Box Tops
It’s the singer, not the song.
I went to see him in concert at the old Hordern Pavillion in Sydney in 1976. He was drinking KB Lager on stage from one of those double sized cans they used to sell, and I think he was half pissed but the music was still so good even the usherettes were dancing. With the life he lived he was never going to live to a hundred, but he got his three score years and ten, and he packed a lot of great music into them.
He sure did, Phil.
Hate to see Joe go. The good music remains. Rock on.
