I sometimes get frustrated with myth that the allied forces during world war two never so much as slapped a civillian.
It bothers me for two reasons.
One. It’s bullshit and I hate bullshit.
Two (and more importantly). It screws our current societal expectations about what a war is and what needs to be done to win it. Our soldiers are saddled with f’ing ridiculous ROEs and crucified at the drop of a hat because they’re always put up against the MYTH of the WW2 soldier.
Our blokes killed heaps to civillians. Many of them would still be rotting in jail if held to today’s standards. By the MYTH of their “clean victory” means that everyone who came after was bound to be compromised in the fight and nailed to a cross after it.
Don’t get me wrong. War is hell and you have to be the devil to win it. That’s the story the BBC should have run. Or would they rather have clean hands and be speaking German?

I’m not knocking the troops for doing what they had to do.
We need a clear understanding that when we send people to war it’s because shit needs to be broken and assholes have got to be killed, and that’s never going to happen in a contained environment.
What happened in Dresden was horrible, but my response to it is “that’s what you get when you allow your government to embark on a genocidal campaign of world domination (funded by your tax dollars). No. You don’t get to sit it out as a civillian and cry war-crime when you get caught up in the crossfire.”
On that note, that’s something we should all give thought to when our own governments start dropping bombs in places that seem too far away to be of concern to us.
It’s all word mencing and bullshit,the whole point of war is to kill enough of your enemy until they either capitulate to your terms or they are decimated.It doesn’t matter one damned bit if it’s a soldier on the battlefield,his wife in the munitions plant or his sister in the maternity ward ALL of them are in the fight whether they know it or not and all are legitimate targets.Of course you want to bomb the munitions factory first out of efficiency,but if a couple fall on the hospital or the school,sad,but tough,they shouldn’t have started the war.
I have said it for years if we are provoked to war,then our response should be total war with no quarter given until the fight is beaten out of our enemy or there are simply none left alive to fight.Any other policy is a weak half measure and will do nothing but prolong the conflict and ensure that the peace will not last.
Under the principle of Total War what at the time used to be called the Front and the Home Front are one and the same. Civilians of all stripes are thus as much fair game as some poor sod trapped in a burning metal box.
You can be sure that if Hitler could have filled the skies with four-engined bombers, the BBC would have been broadcasting from a bunker beneath a layer of smoking rubble and crispy humanoid shapes.
If the RAF hadn’t bombed the shit out of their nuclear program, they would have been a lot of instant sunshine over England.
That’s for sure.
That’s what I was thinking, Total War. That’s what all of those little skirmishes during the Cold War were for – to eliminate the possibility of another all-out massacre. Some new nuclear kids on the block may have other thoughts about that. God help us all.

I’ve said the same thing for years – At some point our Leftists will stab the Islamists in the back just like Hitler did to Stalin in 1941 – however, the knife thrust will only come after their common enemy of Western Civilization is destroyed.
UNLESS, they are stupid like Hitler and attack their ally while Western Civilization still has some life.

There was a bit of debate about the raid on Dresden within bomber crews at the time. The BBC is a left wing propaganda machine today. Dresden remains very controversial and I know of at least one bomb aimer who deliberately dropped his bombs in the country. It made no difference of course and on only that one occasion his conscience was pricked to a point where he deliberately missed.
Hindsight is wonderful but at the end of the day I think that the night bombing campaign in Europe was a generally a waste of time and lives on both sides. The Luftwaffe eventually became grounded by a lack of fuel and pilots rather than the German cities being flattened. In those days bombing was a very blunt instrument.
