This isn’t merely poor methodology – it’s lying under cover of academia.

    I suspect that she comes from the Germaine Greer school of feminism, where all heterosexual intercourse is considered to be rape.

    Seriously, post-war sex is sold for a can of spam or a bar of chocolate.

    Why would a GI steal what was being sold at fire-sale prices or given out for free?

    Rape will always accompany war. There’s no means to take a group of men, teach them to violate the most fundamental law of society in the name of the state, and then expect 100% of those men to walk the straight and and narrow on every other rule in the book.

    That’s no excuse, of course, but it’s a stone cold reality.

    The historical alternative was to learn German. The modern alternative is to learn Chinese.

    Wombat has it. Another radical femenist who counts every act of heterosexual sex as an act of rape. Actually, during WWII and its immediate aftermath, the U.S. Army executed 53 soldiers for rape, and another 21 for rape and murder. This author dishonors our military.

    And as Wombat points out, spam and chocolate were the key to spreading German legs at the time. Actually, in Britain too. Remember the big complaint about U.S. soldiers in the UK at the time — not rape, but “over sexed and over there.”

    My Old Man told me of the time his unit’s airfield (RAF tactical air – Typhoons) was swarmed by Jerry civilians from a nearby village. Seems the occupants of one of the many nazi internment camps in the district housing all sorts of odd sods broke out and went on a rip-shit-an’-bust rampage.

    Same again at a different time when a Red Army second echelon got a weekend pass. When the CO sent up an Auster to aerial recon the situation, it was fired upon but that stopped when its top cover rolled in and put some warning 20mm into an open patch of dirt. Those reds were even ripping toilet pans out of German houses.

    The other commentators are correct. The Red Army was a true rape machine.

    On the other side of the fence, British troops could score with cigarettes (THE currency of choice) and rations. A lot was just given away to the kids who swarmed whenever they set up. Next up the scale was rations for laundry services (very popular). Beyond that…it was a consensual deal even though the brass gave top billing to VD risks. Stringent non-fraternization orders were in place…which is why the kids were the pimps.
