If you are into steam a great place to visit is Oamaru. The town proclaims itself the “Steam-Punk Capital of NZ.” Here the theme is sic-fi based on the technology of the late 19th century and early 20th century. The theme includes fashion, transport (the Steam Train From Hell emerging from the ground) etc.. A bit silly but a fascinating diversion anyway. If I can find a web-page I shall post it.

My Grandmother used to call these “traction engines” and they were used for many purposes including running a sawmill as well as threshing and ploughing. (For the Yanks: “plowing.”) Amazing things which must weigh far more than a Sherman Tank.

Don’t know who the lady is but she does remind me of Margaret Thatcher in her Tank without the headscarf.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_wacko.gif

    Great photo!

They built machines with *pride* in those days and they built them to *last*.

      Damn right they did, Tranquil.
That would make a fine subject for a rant from someone with a better way with words than I can manage, how we’ve lost so much that is worthwhile – yet to point it out is to be almost automatically labelled a boring, redundant grumpy oldie. Or worse.
We had a fine day at that steam festival and it was as much due to the people as their machines. Perhaps more.

Feilding, I presume. A common misspelling.
