‘Could learning Maori unite our nation?

    Yawn.

  2. Odakyu-sen says:

The writer comments: “Or parents sometimes say children should learn something ‘useful’ such as Chinese or Japanese. Has anyone ever thought how insulting it is to a people when we say it’s a dead language? This might come across as a little divisive, or dare I say it, racist?”

    お母さんの言うとうりだ。
Young lady, listen to your mother.

  3. caleb says:

True, better not read this then…

The GCSB must be watching us, for it is certain, we need re-education through an approved government facility

  4. rivoniaboy says:

The black woman who happens to be a friend of the author (Michael Alexander) speaks Zulu and is therefor a member of the Ndebele tribe in Zimbabwe.
The author then goes on to say that she lives with him in Europe. I’ll tell you why she is living in Europe – because she fled the poverty and the fact that if she moved further north she would have to speak Shona the language of her beloved Robert Mugabe.
She has obviously found some dumb twit that has swallowed her bullshit hook line and sinker.

  5. Warren Tooley says:

The arguement at the very end is that learning a new language can open doors. If that really, truly is the case, how about learning something international,http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_good.gif that we use all over the world, like Spanish, German, French, Chinese or English. Maori is only useful to one corner of the globe. Or maybe we should learn binary, which is computer language, a language used in every home that has a computer,http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_wacko.gif I have a twisted sense of humour.

If they’re going to push one language uniting everybody  it should be English, and if not English, dare I say Chinesehttp://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_scratch.gif. Cause their actually are a lot of Chinese here. But Maori, to open doors, that’s silly. And how many Maori are excellent self made factory owners and entrepreneurs. Knowing German and Japanese, will open lucrative doors, knowing Maori won’t. Oh by the way if you use an ANZ ATM in Otahuhu, you have to understand Chinese to use it. Same with Glendene. Maybe, that’s why some people want to preserve the language. So knowing Chinese is getting more and more important whether you like it or not.

    • The Gantt Guy says:

“…how many Maori are excellent self made factory owners and entrepreneurs…”

You mean in NZ, or in Australia where they’re not a protected species for whom money falls from the sky while they sit on their arses and get hand-outs from the gummint?

      • Warren Tooley says:

Gantt guy, most Maori I know of are doing basic stuff, if anything. My brothers are engineers because when they earn, they keep most of it. In Maori households, whatever anyone earns gets shared. So their’s not a lot of motivation to do great at school. Because whatever you earn gets shared.

        • The Gantt Guy says:

What I’m suggesting is that in NZ, Maori have had generations of being told they’re victims of something, they’re owed something and they’re subjugated by someone.

In Australia, there’s nobody to blame for their situation, and sitting back getting stoned and sticking your hand out isn’t an option.

The number of Maori I met when living in Aus who own small businesses, or rise up the corporate ladder, was quite astonishing. Take away the hammock, remove the crushing weight of low expectations, and amazing things can happen.

          • Warren Tooley says:

Hi Gantt, that is remarkable. And no I wasn’t in any way disagreeing with the whole welfare culture issue, as I know that is as sure as hell part of the problem. I was just bringing up another aspect of the fact that in some cultures, you are part of the group, and you get a slice of what the group gets, so their is no incentive to achieve high.

Anyhow, I know this victim mindset, is a big problem, and it is weighing this country down, as I explained on the conservative blog, the topic was about Gareth Morgan. And the Morgans are a banking dynasty that lends to governments by keeping them in debt, by silly spending. And it is good to see that Maoris can achieve after all. I’m glad to hear it. Anyhow my original point, is that learning Chinese, German, French, or Spanish, can open lucrative doors, as their are a number of people who are earning well, and do use the language. So if that’s what people want out of learning a language, learning Maori is just not going to get you as far as learning these other languages.

And no I’m not saying those languages will guarantee you anything, but their is that possibility.

            • The Gantt Guy says:

Agree completely, Warren. The tribal/collectivist mindset is one that ensures nobody can ever rise above the mediocre.

On the original topic, I’d suggest that if Maori (via the vehicle of their paid propagandists the Corporate IWI) wanted their language to survive, they should start by encouraging Maori to learn it – they could give free lessons on the marae. In reality, it has nothing to do with the language, it’s all about money and control.

http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_good.gifhttp://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_good.gifhttp://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_good.gif Yes Gantt guy that’s exactly the issue, its all about the money. When my friend was running a piano lessons business, and I was doing his accounts; a friend of mine said that he was thinking of getting Maori grant money, to have us teach. And the amount they would have given us would have been like $5,000 for the day. Mind you we would have needed to get more people then just one. A lot of money is going to waste in the name of equality.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_cry.gif

  6. Warren Tooley says:

This is just like what I read in the book ‘the undeveloping nation’ a book explaining how NZ is not what it used to be. The author talked about how a National MP, wanted to push science and math in schools, so that we can compete internationallyhttp://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_yahoo.gif. A labour MP, said no, what’s really important is that people understand our Maori historyhttp://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_cry.gif. It seems like the same sort of thing.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_wacko.gif

  7. Ronbo says:

We have this same bullshit in America – learning a foreign language makes one healthy, wealthy and wise :!:

Yeah…Right…In high school way back in the 1960s, the requirement for the college prep course was a foreign language – French, German or Spanish – I opted for Spanish and did the three year requirement with flying colors.

Then after high school I discovered in my world travels that English was spoken everywhere I landed.

I conclude that English has replaced Latin as the default language of the world.http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_yahoo.gif

    • Warren Tooley says:

But Ronbo, you have to admit, that Spanish, is of more use then Maori, I’m not saying your wrong, I’m just saying that if you described stupidity, this is stupidity multiplied by stupidity.

  8. Wombat says:

I would very much like the world to learn sign language.

Not only is it relatively universal, it would aid in the goal of getting more people to shut the f*#k up. :???:

    • Ronbo says:

      LOL :!:

Speaking of sign language, do you remember that scandal at Mandela’s funeral when the sign language guy turned out to be a psycho who signed garble :?:  ….and the networks didn’t figure out the hoax for days after the burial :?:

      • Wombat says:

        I was in stitches.

Even at the time I was watching it I could have sworn it looked like he was throwing up gang-sign after gang-sign.

    • The Gantt Guy says:

In that case should you come to New Zealand, you would be able to speak one of the two official (recognised via legislation) languages of the nation – sign language and the version of the Maori language around which the activists have coalesced. Notably, English is not an official (recognised via legislation) language of New Zealand.

  9. Flashman says:

The silly cow should piss off back to zimbabwe and learn Shona – the language of Mugabe’s tribe.

    Unity will follow. Easy really.

Oh dear, only in NZ do these pc mental midgets find such media oxygen.
