‘…How could a terrorist organization engineer an EMP attack?  They would have to buy or make a lightweight atomic bomb that has plentiful gamma ray emission.  Leaving off the heavy metal casing, which serves to increase yield but absorbs gamma rays, accomplishes the goals of lightness and plentiful gamma rays.  Such a bomb might weight 200 pounds.  A long-range missile is large and heavy and probably feasible only for a nation state, like Iran or North Korea. However, a relatively small and cheap commercial sounding rocket can carry 200 pounds to a height of 300 miles.  Such a rocket can be carried in a truck and assembled someplace near the center of the country.  No precision guidance is necessary – only a fusing device to detonate the bomb at the correct altitude…’
Survival in the Age of EMP
If the author’s figure of 200 pounds is accurate, then this scenario is well within reach of a number of terrorist organisations and any number of hostile countries.

    It will only happen when our leaders have their own tech hardened enough to defeat any EMP attack. Any subsequent resurrection of internet/communications will, naturally, be quite different from what we know today. Which, if it happens that way, begs the question; Will we stand by, or go into seek and destroy mode? For surely the quiet man’s wrath shall bring death to his enemies, no warning, no explanations required. We have not spoken yet. (Apologies to G K Chesterton, “The Quiet People” – recommended).

    I’ve read the book One Second After several times and, yes, it’s a very scary thought, but if it were this easy or profitable then someone would have done it already.

    The fact is that if you destroyed the Western production machine then most people in the world would die horrible deaths and needless to say, no regime in the world would survive the transition.

    We create just about all the luxuries the hypocrite iranian ayatollahs and saudi princes enjoy, and no smaller actor with a motive has the means.

    This method is certainly possible as a scorched earth policy of regimes like North Korea or Iran, but I have serious doubts that they would ever use it pre-emptively.

      Maybe not globally – despite what they say, they know if they kill the host it’s lights-out.

      But on a smaller scale, perhaps they use it to take out Israel?

        If anyone what hardening and protocols in place for this its Israel. Further, Israel’s intelligence sector isn’t some politically driven pack of dickheads who retired the talent several decades ago.

        Even if the relevant actors had the will to black out the whole area they could be reasonably certain that the West would sweep in an clean house, and with something approaching a complete media blackout they wouldn’t be very surgical about it either.

        Not even Obama could dither on intervention in such a case, and once the boots were on the ground the green machine would leave the phone to the Whitehouse off the hook and start doing what they do best.

        The average GI would be champing at the bit to mow down this generations would-be Nazis.

        Just my two cents.
