‘NZ First leader Winston Peters has launched a far-reaching attack on the Government and its economic management, accusing it of being “contemptuous of New Zealanders’ real concerns and problems”.
…Peters also warned the current draft changes to Resource Management Act, with its concessions to the Maori Party, were leading down the path of separatism.
…“Under the new bill, every council in New Zealand will be required by law, to invite the local iwi to “discuss, agree and record ways in which tangata whenua” through iwi authorities, can participate in the formulation of policy plans, including water management plans,” he said.
…”The proposed changes to the RMA are a signal flare to the entire country that the two parties are taking us down the track of separatism. We are no longer one people. We are moving towards two separate groups with separate rights.”
…”National has an agenda to systematically undermine and weaken New Zealand’s sense of identity and sovereignty. This agenda lurks behind a number of issues – including changing the flag, encouraging foreign ownership and flooding the country with immigrants.”
(bold mine)
The issue of separatism, of special rights and privileges based on race, will have to be faced sooner or later. Maori are not some cute cultural group, to be coddled and pandered to at the expense of other New Zealanders. Maori leaders (who are in any case only part-Maori) are prepared to play the race card when it suits them and have already been the recipients of billions in taxpayer money and assets – yet most Maori have seen little or no benefit from this often underhanded transfer of wealth.
Either racism is acceptable or it is not, and special Maori seats, a spurious “legal process” which is no such thing (the Waitangi Tribunal) and various other concessions and bribes to Maori are nakedly racist.
No amount of talk about “redressing grievances” and so forth will ever make these things anything other than racism.
Leftists/”progressives”/socialists are not welcome here. Pay for your own soapbox.

His claims about local authority consultation with indiscriminate iwi are irrelevant. Councils have already taken this on themselves to do so. It is a sick waste of time and money to seek the opinions of uneducated greedy pricks. The Law change will not alter things. The RMA is the single most potent impediment to NZ’s prosperity given it bestows nothing but burdens on private property owners.
Winston will forever be in Opposition as it best suits his personality, hence he ignores the nine years of Clark’s government when year after year proposals to amend the RMA were ignored as Ms Clark didn’t wish to upset maori rights to their “kiatitanga” (or similar) which gives iwi rights of “stewardship” across the entire country. The powers given local authorities under the RMA would make Stalin envious!
“The powers given local authorities under the RMA would make Stalin envious!”
They surely would have.
Any meaningful reform of politics would have to start at the local council level, and concentrate first on curtailing the scope their powers then making executives personally responsible to ratepayers for the effects of their decisions.
I believe very many councils are corrupt from top to bottom.
The irony is that those who put their names forward to be on local authorities seem never to be able enunciate what they wish to achieve…”I want to make a difference!” “I want a better cleaner city.” “I worry about my grandchildren’s futures.” (Pron: Fewchuhs!)
These infantile meaningless cliches are what pass for electoral platforms.
Sad eh?
It’s Anodyne Safespeak.
Or; assinine rubbish.
That too.
If there was a candidate who said they will stock the library, mow the berms and keep the roads sealed, and nothing else, they’d win by a landslide.
Of course that isn’t possible these days, because the Council is also in the business of business. Auckland owns the port company, the water company, etc. etc.
“Any meaningful reform of politics would have to start at the local council level”
And that’s exactly why the powers-that-be push amalgamation. Previously if I had a grievance I could have gone stomping down to Orewa and likely got an appointment to see (a) my local representative, (b) the Rodney Council Mayor, and/or (c) the Chief Executive.
Now, a single council (“Auckland”) covers over a quarter of all citizens.
Government decisions are best made as locally as possible, as close as possible to the people affected by them. It’s the only way to keep the bastards accountable, which is why “they” want councils to become bigger and bigger, until eventually the North Island Council will merge with the South Island Council and all decisions will be made in Wellington.
Amen and amen!!
“…and all decisions will be made in Wellington.”
By the Central Planning Committee…..where have we seen that before? it rings a bell…..
