What the insurers are apparently doing is similar to what airlines ought be doing; assessing passengers on their personal weight rather than simply weighing their suitcases. Why should a hefty person be entitled to have the same weight of luggage than a person with a slighter weight? I think the insurers’ idea is intrusive, but weighing passengers is less intrusive than many of the steps we get subjected to at our airports. (All in the name of security of course!)
There are always “good reasons” for chipping away (pun intended) at our liberties, Cad. And today’s optional becomes tomorrow’s compulsory.

And this is not at all similar to airlines weighing passengers – they can’t possibly build up a database on the individual based on a one-off scales reading. What I eat and how much exercise I do is my own damn business and if that means higher premiums, then so be it. I don’t put a price on privacy. Especially considering how insecure these “secure” databases have proved to be.

What you eat is already being observed if you swipe a Fly-Buys card at the supermarket. Airlines profile their passengers by similar methods…once you join a loyalty programme which is appended to a credit card all your background eventually percolates back to the airline whose database is open to customs/immigration. So in other words you sell your liberty/privacy while smiling to the airline should they give you something (apparently) for nothing. I have had letters from two airlines out of the blue suggesting I repeat earlier holidays, visit a relative or see something “new.” Don’t worry the airlines have us profiled long before the departure date. Weighing can only be an addition to this and it will be. As far as insurers are concerned I am always happy to receive my “non-smokers” discount despite it being a modest reduction. It is interesting I receive this discount without checks, but I expect should I die while the policy is extant my executors will be put to pains to prove I wasn’t a smoker.

We pay cash for everything and if I buy something online the card I use doesn’t belong to me and I reimburse the owner.
Here everything the insurances companies do anymore is based largely on your BMI. As a result I am screwed and my doctor knows it.Nothing I can do short of going Anorexic and losing half my muscle mass will get me even close to a “normal” BMI.
I don’t believe there’s any such thing as a “normal” BMI. Not until somebody takes care of natural variations within a species and as far as I can tell the present way of measuring it doesn’t do that.
BMI is a tool that belongs in the dark ages,I think the only reason the insurance companies use it is because it’s so skewed in their favor.
