Thanks Darin. Interesting motion, a kinda slow sliding and tilting that went on for a couple of minutes. Nausea-inducing.

  2. Ronbo says:

I understand American aid is on its way to New Zealand even as I type these lines – and I expect the Global Leftist Media to keep this top secret, because, as is well known, the USA would never help people in other countries in a disaster.

Oh….and, of course, NZ can look forward to a mountain of aid from China, Russia and Vietnam….:-)

  3. Ronbo says:

    Topic change, but something interesting:

….but we promise Australia to never, never, never do it again.

Effing madness. How to encourage even more invaders.

Worry not, dear Knight. The lucky ones will stay where they are, abused with meals and shelter, tortured with medical care. Those unlucky ones who get to sail to the Promised Land in a soon-to-sink rust bucket will get wet and et by fishes. The New new world order will see to that.

  4. KG says:

Hmmm..shake at around midnight. right now, at 08:09, we have this headline:
Helicopter on way to quake areas’

    Greased lightning, eh?
    But!:
‘NZ Cricket is monitoring quake situation’
    That’ll help. We’re all saved.

    update:
But some responses are very rapid indeed:
    ‘Burglars target evacuated family ‘

I hope that all your New Zealand readers are well and safe. Italy had some ‘quakes a little while ago, now NZ. Of course NZ is in the ring of fire which is particularly unstable. Has anyone blamed Trump for shifting the tectonic plates of DC?

    • Gregoryno6 says:

Aaah, you beat me to it!
Oh, well, I think Tony Abbott will enjoy a break from his role as Man Being Blamed For Everything.
Seriously though, KG and all, I hope you’re safe.

  6. Michael in Nelson says:

Thanks for your concern Darin. Same for me as for KG, long rolling motion that lasted quite a while. At least here in Nelson there isn’t much damage and my place is fine. The worst for me was losing an hours sleep. http://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_cool.gif

    • Brown says:

Wife’s phone has the NZ Geonet app loaded so she gets alerted to EQ’s which she finds interesting but terrifying. We are in Wellington and it was pretty severe but the bloody phone alerting her with the vibrate sound every after shock was a pain that made it hard to get back to sleep. I eventually got grumpy and suggested she put the phone in the lounge under a squab. Not so much as a popped nail or crack in the plaster of all my non consented building work.

  7. MvL says:

Biggest and most scary quake I have ever felt. It just went on and on, building to a very large jolt after about a minute or so.
It is the first time Mrs vL and I felt the need to shelter in a doorway during a quake.
The cats were also pretty stressedhttp://falfn.com/CrusaderRabbit/wp-content/plugins/wp-monalisa/icons/wpml_wacko.gifand continued to be during the after shocks.
Heres a thing… Looking out the window I saw what looked like lightning in the sky, although there was no storm. “Earthquake lightning” perhaps? Or power lines clashing? Our power did not go off though. No damage except to the nerves.
(We are top of the South Island)

  8. RossN says:

Death toll is currently at 2.
Lucky it didn’t hit a city.

Just heard about the quake – KG, I hope your doing well and all other readers from NZ.

Every once in a while the earth has to shake the worthless garbage off of her – and takes the strong for ride…. but I will say prayer for all.

  11. MvL says:

A couple of photos that show a small part of the roading cleanup that will take a lot of work.
The first photo shows the north portals of the twin road tunnels on SH1 Near Kaikoura . Concrete structure to the right is the rail line which enters a tunnel just out of shot.

  12. Pascal says:

I’m glad that nothing really bad happened to any of my friends. But I’ve come to the realization long before I labeled media as the Soviet-Style Media that they are ready willing and able to make a mountain out of a mole hill and downplay any real tragedy if it involves protecting one of their favorites.

So I held off saying anything until I heard it from real people such as yourselves. So God Bless you and that he permit those who torment you for their benefit stumble into the bottomless pit (because they are so out of touch with what is real) real soon now.

  13. KG says:

Yet another Civil Defence bureaucratic screw-up:
    ‘Alarm over sirens’ failure
…Others would have assumed the sirens would be screaming if any danger existed, and since they weren’t, stayed in bed.
Someone of course had to switch the sirens on. That person appears to have been the Christchurch City Council duty officer who was acting on advice from the Canterbury civil defence emergency management group. Both the officer and the group were getting somewhat confusing emails from the Ministry and didn’t realise the Ministry’s website was carrying different advice.
Assumptions were made, questions went unasked and the sirens were turned on two hours after the earthquake. Two hours too late perhaps.’
    http://www.stuff.co.nz/the-press/opinion/86441720/alarm-over-sirens-failure
These bastards have learned NOTHING from Christchurch. What the hell are NZ’s “armed forces” for, if not an event such as this?

    • Darin says:

Take the people out of the loop,a simple Mercury switch is all that’s required.

Of course that system would require a little logic and know how,so all hope of civil servants getting it done is lost.

  14. KG says:

They keep coming, one every few minutes:
