For about 250 years now, the consequences of allowing justice to be narrowed like that has led to real and great injustices.     Bike lanes are f@cking useless. They have all the ” mummy’s” on their bikes, pedestrians wandering along them, glass from bottles thrown out of cars, etc. There is no choice but to ride on the road – which is 100% legal. It is even legal to “occupy” a lane if you feel it is safer to do so – eg roundabouts. It is also legal to ride 2 abreast. What is not legal is to threaten physical harm to other road users. Bikers are frequently killed by drivers who are aggressive toward them, the “punishment pass” is particularly frightening if you are on a bike. If I had my way every cyclist death from a collision with a car would start with being investigated as being an homicide.       We have a lot of people who ride here where I live,but they know the rules of the road.They can use the same lane as vehicular traffic,but must follow the same rules,stopping at intersections etc.
      Here it’s never those people that are using their bike for transportation or a weekend ride that are the problem.It’s the Lycra clad road warriors that are the problem,especially out in the countryside where they often run in packs of 15 or 20 and take up both sides of the road.Those idiots want to argue right of way with farm equipment even though the law clearly states farm equipment has the right of way.

      Some of his facts seem to be wrong. Koevoet started before the date given. I was in Ovamboland in ’77 and they were already operating and formidable. The kill ratios are also a bit out. In No 2 operational area – west Ovamboland, the various units like the paras and certain civilian force units were having huge successes and in the time I was there there was only one SADF death. I saw dozens of “other” corpses. Most of the patrols were on foot and the Boer farmer trackers were better than the Bushmen (Khoi San). I think that the Caprivi Strip, which is not part of Ovamboland, was almost entirely policed by the SAP of which Koevoet was part.
