Colonialism was most certainly the best thing that ever happened to Africa. When Europeans arrived in Southern Africa the black tribes were in the Iron Age. They had not even invented the wheel. To the benefit of Africans the Europeans brought with them farming, healthcare, commerce and industry and education. Under Colonial rule there was a measure of peace and prosperity with a massive decline in death rates, especially in the under 5’s, and increased longevity. So much so that their populations grew in an exponential manner. African Marxism has destroyed all this as one thug, and his henchmen, after another has looted the exchequer and suppressed his people with violence. Their European colonial masters must also bear a significant amount of blame for the state of their ex colonies by not holding them to the same standards that they apply to other countries which has led them to turn a blind eye to the vile vicious behaviour of their latest “chosen” leader to replace them. The worst example must surely be Mugabe who was held up as “the African leader” that would dispel the notion of violent kleptomaniac marxist leaders that had filled the role one independent nation after another. Britain ignored the Gukurahundi where Mugabe and his North Korean 5th columnists murdered the entire leadership – 30 000 priests, tribal chiefs, teachers, etc. – of the Ndebele, his tribal opposition.
It’s one of the, if not the biggest tragedies in modern history. An entire continent of people possessing enormous potential, ruled over and wasted by marxist thugs. Most of it promoted and excused away by a global cabal of lapdog media.
There’s only one thing worse than Communism and that’s African Communism.
I read that one of Africa’s many problems is widespread polygamy. And “mtumba”, cheap second hand clothes that are forced upon their people by offshore traders, which prevents their best and brightest creating textile industries, and industry in general. Rich western countries developed wealth through textile industries. (British industrial age weaving looms, American Cotton picking, Florentine banking wealth started with cloth trade). Africa is being prevented from building its own clothing industry, keeping them impoverished. They don’t need any more Western virtue signalling aid.
South Africa had a large, and very good, textile industry. I still wear clothing bought there 20 years ago. The “industrial action” encouraged by the ANC/SA Communist Party/Trade Union alliance that is the government resulted in the whole industry closing up and moving lock, stock and barrel to Mauritius.
Interesting. OZ and NZ got wealthy head start on sheep. Strong local leadership would be necessary. To keep the large global corporate raiders at bay. There is a place for tariffs, which allows a country to develop ground root technical and manufacturing skills for its people. It’s not necessarily about the clothes, but the whole plethora of industries that are required to support textile industrialization. From growers, fitters, electricians, welders, machinists, traders, doctors, then better schools, universities, etc etc. No country wants to provide slave labour. Its a trap. The free-trade argument that Locke pushed was backed by the power of the British Navy and its big guns. It was one way free trade. Pushed by English industrialists. Now the globalists push it. Commies want to control the means of production, but Africa has no means of production.
Every time government gets involved in commerce they screw it up. A robust, innovative economy is founded on free enterprise, has a manufacturing base and is organic in nature driven solely by supply and demand~the needs of the market. Government’s only responsibility should be to keep the shipping lanes open.

If the private companies were small and decentralised like the pencil makers, I would tend to agree with Milton, but the trouble is corporations have become more powerful than government. Those little pencil part makers have become Google and Apple and BlackRock and Vanguard. They have undue influence, and are now forcing us to use their pencils. The state now gets pushed around. A strong state should be wise enough to rule with a light touch [Burke I think] and create the environment for free individuals and free trade. We are completely imbalanced at the moment. Bring back Tariff and anti-monopoly laws and split the big buggers up. And hold another Reece Committee investigation to keep BlackRock well out of our lives.
Leftists/”progressives”/socialists are not welcome here. Pay for your own soapbox.

"The loss of freedom is like cancer; it will spread slowly but surely across all parts of society until our liberty has been utterly eaten away and we are left with nothing but a half-forgotten idea of what freedom was."
