I’ve worked both public and private sector ICU’s and they are almost always full. There is always competition for beds. Major surgery cases get cancelled on day of surgery because there are no vacant beds. There are continual work-arounds to make bed space for acute cases such as setting up one-on-one nursing care in the ward to be able to move the least sick patient out of the ICU to make way. The UK is probably the worst off …. and this makes headlines?
