Human beings are frail, we are aware of our frailty and need reassurance. The kind of reassurance we got from mum when we scraped our knees, the tender wiping away of our tears, the gentle voice saying There there, everything will be fine. As we grow older we find reassurance in God, everything will be fine. Take God away, destroy faith and we look to human solutions, reassurance. We are seeing the results of that vacuum right now. I’m afraid that we have lost, or close to losing, the war for our souls.

Whatever it is that hardwires us into belief in a deity, be it ignorance or wisdom, it’s part and parcel of what we are.

Yes, we also fear our own mortality which also pushes irrational actions and a desire to rule over others in some.
