I have just finished watching a documentary about Marc Lee, a machine gunner for Seal Team 3 in Iraq. They followed the team during the fighting in Ramadi and his teammates talked about him and the kind of man he was.

I experienced much of what he says in my limited engagement in a war; the thing that surprised me the most, as a conscript fighting for a government that I opposed because of its racial policies, was how much I began to hate the enemy because of their race. Fortunately the military seconded me to an understaffed mission hospital shortly thereafter where I was warmly welcomed and embraced by the local population who are of that race, despite my military uniform and the political strife that was tearing the nation apart.
